American Red Cross BLCOM COUNTY by Berlie Breathed By MIKE WATERS Staff Writer Mac Ford is being, asked to do a lot more than just score goals for the third ranked North Carolina lacrosse team. After five games in the 1984 season, the junior attacker has been put to the task of a new leadership role. - "My role has changed since last year," Ford said. "I'm expected to be more of a leader. I'm trying to take more initiative and control the offense." Ford, who leads UNC with 14 goals and eight assists, has had two years in the perfect setting to develop himself as a team leader. In 1982, Ford played a vital role on North Carolina's second national championship team. He was named the team's most outstanding freshman, played in all 14 games, and finished the year with 23 points sixth best on the team. As a sophomore, Ford was part of what may have been one of the most pro lific offensive lines in UNC lacrosse history. The Timonium, Md. native teamed with since-graduated Michael Burnett (19 goals, 30 assists) and David Wingate (35 goals, 6 assists).. Although he was then seeing starting action for the first time, Ford fit right in with Burnett and Wingate. He scored 14 goals and had 1 1 assists, even though he took only 35 shots to Burnett's 74 and Wingate's 80. "It's not my role to score like David and Michael did," Ford said. "But my job has definitely changed. I like to go one-on-one with a guy to see how much my skills have improved. 4 I have a lot more confidence handling the ball, especially when it's a tight game. I like to control the ball and the offense; that I learned from Burnett and Wingate." Ford said he sees a lot of differences between the '83 and '84 teams. "We have a lot of unknowns this year," he said. "The past couple of years we've had a lot of people who knew what they could do. Right now, we are still find ing out what we can do; no one expected us to be four and one." Ford said the predominance of younger players on this year's squad had given both games and practice a fresher, more invigorating feel. "We are working more than any team I've ever been associated with," Ford said. "This is a very unselfish team; last year it was a lot more individualized. The Maryland game showed that, with everybody scoring." Last Saturday's win over the Terrapins benefited the Tar Heels in several ways other than establishing a balanced scoring attack. The 19-11 win avenged a disappointing 11-9 loss to Maryland last year in College Park. It also provided UNC with some substantial momentum going into this Saturday's meeting with No. 2 Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. "We're looking forward to playing Hopkins," Ford said. "A lot of people are so in awe of Hopkins, but we've beaten them more than they've beaten us. "Their offense, on paper, is the most potent in the nation," he said. "But they haven't seen a defense like ours. The team with the best attitude will win it." Ford said he thinks North Carolina's attitude may be at just the right level to upset the undefeated Blue Jays. "We are looking great for a young team," he said. "We've improved tremendously. Since the fourth quarter against Syracuse (UNC's only loss) we've gained so much confidence. "I'm really excited about this year. Usually I'm not real emotional, but I get emotional when I have to be. "The harder we've worked, the better we've been," he said. "We're starting to really know Ourselves. We've picked up a quiet sense of confidence."
