Senate approves aid for anti-Sandinista guerrillas
In Wednesday's story, "Two charged
for school break-in," the DTH incorrect
ly referred to the Lincoln Center as a
school when it is actually the city school's
administrative office. The DTH also
misspelled the name of Chapel Hill
Newspaper reporter Karen Haywood.
The DTH regrets the errors.
From Associated Press Reports
WASHINGTON By a 76-19
vote, the Senate Thursday approved
$61.7 million in emergency aid for El
Salvador and $21 million for anti
Sandinista guerrillas in Nicaragua.
The aid provoked strong opinions
in the Senate with Sen. Edward M.
Kennedy, D-Mass. saying, "The
Senate has voted for wider war in El
serious resistance to the expansion of
Soviet power in our hemisphere."
The bill now goes to the Democrat
controlled House which will have only
three working days to consider it
before beginning a 10-day faster
recess next week.
Dow drops to year low
NEW YORK The stock market
dipped to its lowest level in nearly a
year Thursday as interest-rate ner
vousness plagued Wall Street in
vestors. The Dow Jones average of 30 in
dustrial stocks fell slightly more than
18 points to 1,130.55, the lowest clos
ing figure since April 8, 1983. The
Dow had plunged 44.07 points over
the last six trading days as concern for
rising interest rates has hit Wall Street.
