Clemson gets vengeance by downing Tar Heels, 5-1

Staff Writer
They say vengeance is sweet, and
Clemson got vengeance Sunday after
noon in Boshamer Stadium before 2,500
fans and a cable TV audience, defeating
North Carolina, 5-1.
The victory put the Tigers into first
place in the ACC race and repaid the Tar
Heels for their 3-1 ninth-inning come-from-behind
victory a week before at
Clemson.
"We wanted to rise to the occasion to
play North Carolina," Tiger starter and
winning pitcher Scott Parrish said.
"Especially after last week."
Things looked good for North Carolina
at the start. B.J. Surhoff led off the game
with a double off the top of the right field
wall and scored on a Mike Jedziniak
single.
In the second, Scott Johnson and
Mitch McCleney singles and a walk to
Glenn Liacouras loaded the bases with
one out and it looked like lights out for
Parrish. But the junior right hander pop
ped up Surhoff and induced a Walt Weiss
grounder to end the inning to escape
without any damage, still down only 1-0.
"We didn't capitalize on the hits we
got today," UNC coach Mike Roberts
said. "Clemson capitalized on the hits
they got, and that's why they won."
Starter Gordon Douglas, normally a
reliever but starting for the sore-armed
Scott Bankhead, shut down Clemson un
til the fourth. The Tigers' Jim McCollom
followed a walk to Brooks Shumate with
a towering home run to left field to make
it 2-1, Clemson. McCollom' s home run
was only the Tigers' second hit of the
day.
After a Tiger run in the seventh made it
3-1, the Tar Heels mounted a threat in the
bottom half. Liacouras and Surhoff
singles put two runners on with one out,
and the Boshamer crowd livened up in
anticipation. Parrish, however, would
hear nothing of a Tar Heel rally, getting
two quick outs.
"Parrish did a very good job today,"
Roberts said. "He got the outs when he
needed them."
Two errors and a tired Douglas pro
duced another Clemson run in the eighth

for a 4-1 lead, and the sophomore
righthander left the game.
"We wanted to go as long as possible
with Gordon," Roberts said. "He did an
outstanding job."
Clemson got another run in the ninth
for the final margin and that was more
than enough for Parrish, who recorded
his 20th college victory.
"1 was happy to get those insurance
runs in the late going," Parrish said.
"They (UNC) were racking me up in the
early going, and I saw how they came
back last week."
The crowd was buzzing in anticipation
of another comeback by UNC after
Saturday's thrilling 10-inning, come-from-behind
win over Georgia Tech. But
Parrish put the Tar Heels down in order
in the ninth to wrap up his sixth win of
the year and put Clemson in first place by
half a game. The Tigers are now 10-2 in
ACC play, while North Carolina is 9-2.
Saturday's 6-2 victory over Georgia
Tech produced one of the most exciting
finishes of the season. North Carolina
had come from behind in the eighth to
earn a 2-2 tie and extra innings.
Three consecutive singles by the Yellow
Jackets had put UNC starter Roger
Williams down 1-0 in the second inning.
Pete Geist hit a home run in the third to
put Georgia Tech ahead, 2-0.
The Tar Heels scratched back, though.
A Glenn Liacouras grounder scored a run
in the fourth to make it 2-1, and Jeff
Hubbard knocked in Surhoff in the
eighth to chase Yellow Jacket starter Stu
Rogers and tie the score at two.
Then came the bottom of the tenth.
With one out, Surhoff reached on a Keith
Kerver error. Walt Weiss singled, and an
intentional walk to Hubbard loaded the
bases and brought up Todd Wilkinson.
The senior, who was hitting .457 over his
last nine games, drove a 1-1 slider over
the roster board in left-centerfield for a
grand slam and the victory. The
Boshamer crowd went wild, as did
Wilkinson's teammates.
"I got all of it," Wilkinson said of
loser Keith Fleming's slider. "The
adrenaline was really pumping, and I
don't remember how I felt rounding the
bases, but after I crossed home plate I felt
great."

"We had a lot of opportunities, but we
didn't have any luck shooting the ball,"
Scroggs said. "If some of our shots fall,
it's a different game. We're not as over
powering offensively, and we have got to
score on those opportunities.
"Hopkins did play a great game defen
sively and they didn't give us a lot. Their
kid (Quinn) did a great job in the goal.
We missed a few open cages, and I told
them to keep trying, but nothing fell for
us all day."
The loss drops No. 3 UNC to 4-2, while
No. 2 Hopkins moves to 6-0.
