Sponsored by Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity, the auction raises money for charities in Orange County, said Todd Harrell, assistant Campus Chest chair man. Autographed items to be put on the block include a basketball signed by the 1984 Tar Heels, Miss Piggy's glove, a Joan Rivers comedy album and a Dallas Cowboys pennant signed by Tom Lan dry. Department of Natural Resources to revitalize the LloydBroad Street area. The depart ment will soon begin evaluating applica tions from municipalities in the state for funds to under take community revitalization projects. At a meeting last week, the Carrboro Board of Aldermen approved the ap plication that was submitted to the department on Monday. The board agreed to allocate $313,322 to rehabilitate Broad Street, Fowler Street, Cobb Street and Starlite Drive. Harrell said APO got the autograph ed items by writing to celebrities and organizations to ask for donations. "We ask basically the same people every year so they're familiar with us," he said. Har rell added that APO receives donations from almost everyone they write to. APO is hoping for a good turnout this year. According to Harrell, "We hope to fill up the place." He said that last year's auction drew close to 100 people and this year there is plenty of room for more. Harrell said that last year APO grossed approximately $1,500 to $2,000, although for state grant The rehabilitation plans include widening the streets and constructing sidewalks, curbs and gutters, said Roy Williford of the town staff. He said that $140,600 would be allocated for low-interest loans for residents in that area. In addition $1 1,000 would be spent to destroy several dilapidated structures. Applications are judged on the basis of benefit to low- and moderate-income peo ple, project design, community needs and compliance with state policy. Not all block grants will be awarded. The application submitted by the town last year was turned down, Williford said. Duke student wins 1 0k road race By MIKE GUNZENHAUSER Staff Writer Bruce Geltman, a graduate business student at Duke University, won the 10-kilometer race in 33:22 at the 1 1th An nual WCHL Cross-Country Challenge Saturday at Carmitfiael field. The race was one of five events spon sored by WCHL Radio and The News and Observer of Raleigh to raise money for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Pacers, a running club for children ages 8 to 18. Between 275 and 300 runners competed in Saturday's races, which included a 100-meter dash and 800-meter race for children, a 2-mile road race, and a 1-nule racewalk. Pacers volunteer Sue Conrad said the turnout was "a little disappointing" because another racing event was scheduled for the same day. The amount of money earned for the Pacers had not yet been determined.
