Anyone living in the state can use the services offered by the Dental School, said Dr. F.W. McCracken, assistant dean of the School. "We just love .having students come in," he said. Three levels of practice are offered at the School. The first level is the student clinic, which offers basic dental care such as filling cavities and cleaning teeth. These services are performed for about one-third of what private practices would charge. "If the needs are too compli cated for the student clinic, we have the graduate or specialty clinic," McCracken said. The fees for treatment at this level are around two-thirds of the cost of the same treatment in a private practice. Although the fees for service at the Dental School are reduced, the care provided is professional, according to McCracken. Every step of work done by a student is double-checked by a faculty member, he added. In addition to the two student clinics, Dental School faculty Be Immortal. In order to be accepted as a patient in the School, one must first go to the screening clinic, where a $7 fee covers the cost of a dental examination and X-ray. A faculty member then conducts a consultation with the patient, referring him to a clinic if necessary. UNC Student Health Service also refers patients to the Dental School. According to McCracken, students who come to the School with dental emer gencies are not charged if they were referred by Student Health. As dental technology advan ces, the School constantly improves the quality of treatment that is offered to patients, McCracken said. The use of dental sealants, which are placed on teeth to prevent decay, is one example of the newer treatments. "The advantage is that it's a totally painless procedure," he said. Approximately 700-1000 stu dents each year take advantage of the services offered by Dental School students and faculty, McCracken said. "At times there may be a problem getting a screening appointment.'" he said, adding that students who make appointments should probably expect about a four- to six-week wait. "However, we do encourage students, especially undergradu ates who have the time, to come in," McCracken said. Ok, Xoidyl nm,P C7D . PP i, 4 vvllcl jldlll cy-fLnton. "We have tried to get former transfers as Orientation Counse lors for the transfers," he said, "because they are more familiar with problems such as whether course credits will transfer in or not." Orientation for graduate stu dents will be much less structured than that for the other groups, said Sharon Weston-Dawkes, graduate program coordinator. Weston-Dawkes said the various academic departments take a much more active role in grad uate student Orientation. Zeugner said, "Grad student Orientation will focus more on the community because many grad students are married and have families. They want to know more about communitv services." Convocation for transters and graduate students will be held Aug. 19 in Memorial Hall. The social aspect of Orienta tion for freshmen will feature a variety of parties, cookouts and mixers, Kothapalli said. This will be the first year that alcohol will be prohibited from any activity sponsored by the Orientation Commission, because of the new legal drinking age of 19, she said. In addition, each residenc area will sponsor social event she said. The Orientation Commission will present the movies 48 Hours and Psycho, and on Friday, Aug. 24, will hold a field day, featuring events in which the various housing areas compete, Zeugner said. "The purpose of field day is to provide something that everyone can compete in, not just outstand ing athletes," he said.
