"Our name opens doors," said Keith Weston, host4of last From the Past, a show broadcast every Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. featuring music from the years 1966 to 1972. ' Burton, station manager since 1980 and now a full-time law student as well, and music director Ken Friedman, host of the popular Anarchy in the P.M., a hard-core punk show now in its sixth year on Thursday nights from 8 to 1 1 p.m., decide which new albums receive airplay. Burton also selects disc jockeys. Whenever jockeys are needed, he reviews a list of those who have expressed interest, personally interviewing each. He asks each prospective jockey a number of standard questions about music, and if the appli cant proves worthy in the control room, he or she will likely first become a substitute jockey. Of the almost 100 disc jockeys and 25 news people at the station, nearly all are . students. Most of the rest are former' students soon to be in transit away from Chapel Hill or to graduate school. "A lot of undergrads think there are a bunch of punkers up there, but they're really a bunch of friendly people," Weston said. "I used to just practically live here when I was in school," said Sheila Ferguson, a four-year veteran jock who picked up a journalism major and now works for the research division for family medicine at N.C. Memorial Hospital, and who fantasizes about working for National Geographic. "It used to be you come up here on a Friday afternoon and there'd What's 31000. A regular p donor. aviiicfjs of rJ WSJJVJJ K ? VJ) from page 1 be a dozen people sitting around here talking." Like Burton, who worked for WQDR for a year, Ferguson has tried commercial radio. "I've worked at a number of commercial radio stations and found it was really boring and horrible," she said. "I like playing a really wide variety (of music). Commercial stations are business, pure and simple." Weston, a recent UNC graduate who majored in English and philosophy, has worked at WKZL in Winston-Salem and WRBX in Durham, but said, "On com mercial radio, you have a lot of closed minded people. All they're interested in is the bottom line. Request lines are a big, big rip-off. YouVe got to play what's on that sheet." Weston said he was drawn to WXYC by the ' music and the people, and he believes few of the jockeys are doing their jobs to get experience for commercial radio. "They do it for the music," he said. Several WXYC jockeys, however, have gone on to commercial radio. WQDR's Bob Walton, Maria Mills and Mark Barger are three that come to mind. Still, most of the jockeys do it because they love the music. Becky Sillman plays her Echo and the Bunnymen; Sheryl Parker plays her UB40 and Keith Weston plays his The W.C. Fields' Memorial String Band the group that did the original version of "I'm Not Your Step ping Stone." Somehow it all mixes together in a first rate university station.
