Columbia St Chapel Hill, NC 942-3162 1105 Broad St. Durham, NC 286-2222 By MARJORIE MORRIS - Staff Writer Decreasing the high employe tur nover rate which plagued the 1983-84 fiscal year should be given higher priority, Chapel Hill Mayor Joseph Nassif told Town Manager David Taylor at a town coucil meeting Mon day night. Last fiscal year, 65 employes left. Twelve of the 65 were law enforcement officers. The Chapel Hill Police Department had the highest employe turnover rate, contributing to the town's overall rate of 16 percent. The 1982-83 turnover rate was 11 percent. . Cameron Village Raleigh, NC 832-0557 It takes six months after an officer is hired before he is able to go out on the streets alone, Taylor said. During this six-month training, the cost to Chapel Hill is approximately $15,000 per officer before the town gets any return on its money. He said the highest turnover rate should be in public works and not in the police department. Taylor said progress was made, noting the approval of joint planning with Orange County, the passage of the thoroughfare plan, and the approval of the Rosemary Square Project. The Rosemary Square Project is the mixed use development plan approved by the Town Council for the town's parking lot, east of the NCNB building.
