In fact, the one time he shoots at someone, he misses. Wes Block (Eastwood) is a cop trying to deal with post-divorce depression and at the same time track down the killer responsible for a series of sex murders. One side of his life is characterized by a loving relationship with his two daughters, whom he raises alone. The other side is dominated by his nightly forays into the sleaze and sex parlors of New Orleans red-light district. IVY HILLIARD Review Fortunately for Tightrope, Eastwood is a straight shooter in his performance. Block is a refreshing change from the uncompromising, granite-jawed types Eastwood usually plays in his detective and western films, and this is easily the best role Eastwood has tackled since the uncharacteristic Bronco Billy. Eastwood's Block is more vulnerable and self-destructive. While pursuing the psycho, he becomes the pursued as the killer, who identifies with him, stalks him through the city's sexual haunts and eventually threatens his family. Genevieve Bujold plays a rape defense teacher whose involvement in the case turns into a personal interest in Block and his problems. Although her role is cliched, Bujold plays an admirably strong woman character amid the rest of the film's less-than-wholesome female role models. Allison Eastwood, Clint's real-iife daughter, gives a touching performance; as Block's thoughtful older daughter. Jennifer Beck, who plays Block's younger daughter in the adorable Drew Barrymore tradition, provides the two funniest moments in the film. Despite the violence of its theme, Tightrope is really more effective as a psychological thriller about what can happen when a policeman gets too close to his work. Very little actual violence takes place on-screen, so at times the pace of the movie lags, but it never bores. First-time director Richard Tug?e cuts away from a little too much action, which keeps the tension level high, and the darkened atmosphere "IpT almost every setting" 'teSb 1 fat toWa'fd .film noir that it can be a strain on the eyes. Tightrope never unravels plotwise, however. By the time the psycho meets his appropriately gory end, Block has regained his balance and faced his problems. As an actor, Eastwood has always walked the fine line between being dismissed as one-dimensional and being recognized as a gifted performer. Tightrope may just be the movie that proves once and for all that Eastwood is not only enduringly popular but enduringly talented.
