Four consecutive shut-outs in two days of the North Carolina Invitational Tournament gave the Tar Heels a dose of early-season momentum. It started Friday as UNC hosted N.C. Wesleyan in the inaugural tournament's first game: The Tar Heels responded with a 4-0 win, their closest contest of the weekend. Amy Machin, Joan Dunlap, Emily ' Pickering and April Heinrichs all scored first-half goals to give the UNC the first shutout. The second romp came that after noon against Warren Wilson. Dunlap and freshman Aja Parsons each scored three goals .as UNC cruised to a 9-0 victory. Things weren't any more difficult on Saturday. In the first game, junior striker Jo Boobas exploded for three first-half goals to help UNC coast to another 9-0 victory, this time over Methodist College. Sophomore mid fielder Marsha McDermott also chipped in two goals to help out the cause. The fourth shutout came later against Guilford College. In that one, senior midfielder Emily Pickering put two balls in the back of the net and assisted on another goal to give the Tar Heels an 8-0 win. UNC outscored its opponents by a total of 30-0 and outshot them, 95-4 over the two days. Coach Anson Dorrance was pleased Lendl in U.S. Open doubt.
