Women's soccer opens with four
By SCOTT SMITH
Staff Writer
This weekend at Fetzer Field the
North Carolina women's soccer team
may have gotten off to the quickest 4
0 start in history.
Four consecutive shut-outs in two
days of the North Carolina Invitational
Tournament gave the Tar Heels a dose
of early-season momentum.
It started Friday as UNC hosted N.C.
Wesleyan in the inaugural tournament's
first game: The Tar Heels responded
with a 4-0 win, their closest contest of
the weekend.
Amy Machin, Joan Dunlap, Emily '
Pickering and April Heinrichs all scored
first-half goals to give the UNC the first
shutout.
The second romp came that after
noon against Warren Wilson. Dunlap
and freshman Aja Parsons each scored
three goals .as UNC cruised to a 9-0
victory.
Things weren't any more difficult on
Saturday. In the first game, junior
striker Jo Boobas exploded for three
first-half goals to help UNC coast to
another 9-0 victory, this time over
Methodist College. Sophomore mid
fielder Marsha McDermott also
chipped in two goals to help out the
cause.
The fourth shutout came later against
Guilford College. In that one, senior
midfielder Emily Pickering put two
balls in the back of the net and assisted
on another goal to give the Tar Heels
an 8-0 win.
UNC outscored its opponents by a
total of 30-0 and outshot them, 95-4
over the two days.

doubt.
McEnroe used his strong serve-and-volley
game to hold serve every set,
while refuting speculation that he might
be too tired to play well after Saturday's
marathon five-setter against Jimmy
Connors, which did not end until 11:15
p.m.
Martina Navratilova won her second
straight U.S. Open women's title and
captured her 55th consecutive victory
Saturday with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory
over Chris Evert-Lloyd.

"We have enough experience to be

scheduling four games in two days was
a problem."
Of his regulars, Dorrance was most
impressed with sophomore striker
Dunlap, who had five goals and three
assists, plus a hat trick against Warren
Wilson. "She showed that she is really

said. "Joan has come back with a really
