Police: protect your computers By GUY LUCAS Staff Writer , Computers have become a popular target of theft, and the best way to protect them may be as simple as engraving, said Ned Comar of University Police. Comar said Student Stores was selling more computer related items than ever. Because so many students have computers, the likelihood of theft is great, he said. Although there have been no problems yet, the potential is tremendous, he said. The best solution, Comar said, is for students to engrave their driver's license number on the computer. "Never the Social Security number . . . that's no good to us," he said. "The thieves would know we can't use the Social" Security number." Students can borrow engravers from the police by signing for them; Comar said. Putting the driver's license number prominently on the computer discourages thieves because they will not be able to pawn or resell it. The police are planning to engrave the University's computers. Comar said they were trying to get the University to order anchor pads, too. Anchor pads are interlocking steel plates with a unique-key arrangement, he said. One plate would be attached to the bottom of the computer and one would be attached to the desk. The plates lock together with the key, and the computer can be unlocked and moved to a different, compatible plate on another desk. Comar said companies custom-made the pads to fit the company's computers. Part of the reason the University is doing more to protect its computers is because two were stolen over the summer. In July an IBM printer and computer were stolen from the department of public health and in August an Apple computer and some software were stolen from the department of highway safety. University Police Major C.E. Mauer said there are currently no suspects in either robbery and the computers haven't been recovered, but both cases are still under investigation. N "Detectives have sent letters to all the people that service these types of computers ... so that if somebody asks about getting one of them serviced "well find out about it," he said. The computer at the department of highway safety has been replaced, Comar said. B.J. Campbell, director of the department, said, " WeVe taken plenty" of precautions, but he declined to give specifics. The Daily Tar HeelThursday, September 13, 19843 Mental health service creates 2 groups From the Student Health Service The mental health section of the Student Health Service is offering two new support groups. One is for women students who have experienced incest, and the other is for students whose parents are separated, divorced or are in the process of doing so. "As students make us aware of their needs, we try to be responsive," said Dr. Myron Liptzin, SMH director. "It is our experience and that of others that these kinds of problems can best be addressed in a group format so that students can share experiences, ideas, obtain information, learn better ways of coping, and develop a peer support network." Carolyn Cole, a clinical social worker who will lead the group for incest survivors, said more attention was being given to incest. "Even television has begun to deal with the topic," Cole added, referring to "Something About Amelia," a drama about father-daughter incest in an upper middle-class family, on ABC last spring. A 1978 study of college students found that 8.4 percent of the women surveyed had been sexually molested by a family member before age 18. A random survey of adult women in San Francisco in 1979 reported at least 16 percent of the respondents had been incestuously abused as children. Applying these figures to UNC would mean as many as 1 ,000 to 2,000 women enrolled may have experienced child hood incest. Although they have survived the trauma and are in college or graduate school, many may have never had the opportunity to talk about their expe riences and to obtain help in resolving the emotional consequences and effects on self-esteem and interpersonal rela tionships such trauma often produces. The group for students whose parents are separated or divorced will deal with the problems these students often experience: the feeling of being "caught in the middle," with divided loyalties; feeling responsible for taking care of the parent who seems most troubled; having to cope with the loss of a two parent home; becoming estranged from siblings; losing a family home to return lo and handling the financial compli cations which the divorce of parents entails, Liptzin said.
