Dean Williamson replaces Morrow as UNC provost Meddock
from paQ8 1
Samuel R. Williamson, dean of the College of Arts
and Sciences and the General College has been
appointed University provost, head of the University's
Division of Academic Affairs.
The UNC Board of Governors approved Willliam
son Friday as the replacement for Charles Morrow,
provost for the past 15 years. Morrow resigned his
post to return to full-time teaching and research.
As provost, Williamson said he hoped to help the
University continue implementing its newly restruc
tured undergraduate curriculum. In addition, he said
he planned to help the operation of the University's
library and computer facilities.
Williamson will assume his new position once the
University finds a replacement for his current job.
The Division of Academic Affairs includes the
College of Arts and Sciences, the General College,
the six professional schools, the University library,
Ackland Art Museum, the Computation Center, the
Meuiit and instructional support Center, and the
summer session.
Since his appointment as dean in 1977, Williamson
has supported the restructuring of the undergraduate
curriculum. He gave special attention to fund raising
for the College of Arts and Sciences and to introducing
computer-assisted instruction at the University.
Previously a history professor, Williamson was the
first director of the University's curriculum in peace,
war and defense. He specializes in strategic and
diplomatic history.
Before coming to Chapel Hill in 1972, Williamson
was a faculty member at Harvard University and
assistant to the dean of Harvard College. He also
taught at the J.F. Kennedy School of Government.
Williamson received his bachelor's degree in history
in 1958 from Tulane University and studied at the
University of Edinburgh as a Fulbright scholar. He
earned his master's degree and his doctorate from
Harvard University.

As Meddock explained, "My ultimate
responsibilities are the safety of the
event and the fairness of the contest."
He was definitely kept busy in Kinston,

Poor weather conditions forced Med

scheduled contests to be flown so that
balloonists of all experience levels could
participate under safe racing conditions.
In the spring, Meddock plans to
attend a similar hot air balloon race in
Burlington.
Hunt urged to let Bar field die
RALEIGH Gov. Jim Hunt "has
no choice" but to let stand Velma
Barfield's Nov. 2 execution date,
families of Barfield's poisoning victims
said yesterday.
"If he (Hunt) goes by the merits of
the case, he really has no choice," said
Alice T. Storms, whose father was
among those killed. Our trip to Raleigh "
today is one that should not be neces
sary. No victims of violent crime should
have to persuade anyone to enforce the
law, much less to bring letters to
persuade the highest official in the state
to uphold the law."
Following a press conference at the
Capitol with about a dozen supporters,
Storms said she would give Hunt 2,000
signed letters seeking Barfield's execu
tion. Hunt has promised a quick
decision after meetings today and
tomorrow with supporters and oppo
nents of clemency.
Barfield's attorney petitioned Hunt
for clemency on Saturday.
Barfield's supporters have recently
mounted a campaign to portray her as
a woman whose drug addiction led to
the poisonings, said Kim Norton,
Barfield's 21-year-old daughter.
But Storms said yesterday that
Barfield was "an accomplished liar to
the point of taking advantage of every
social issue" to get clemency.

Now's the time to act. Because the NSA Professional
Qualification Test (PQT) will be given on selected
college campuses on October 20.
Successfully competing on this test qualifies you for
consideration by the National Security Agency. NSA is
currently seeking top graduating students to meet the
challenges of its important communications security
and foreign intelligence production missions.
If you qualify on the PQT. you will be contacted
regarding an interview with an NSA representative. He
or she will discuss the specific role you can play within
such fields as data systems, language, information
science, communications, and management.
So pick up a PQT bulletin at your college placement
office. Completed registration forms must be received
by October 5th, in order to take the test on October 20th.
There is no registration fee.
Graduates with a Bachelors or Masters Degree in
Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or a Slavic,
Near Eastern or Far Eastern language, may sign up for
an interview without taking the PQT.
All NSA career positions require U. S. citizenship, a
thorough background investigation, and a medical
review.
