Vill the real Carolina quarterback please stand up?
i y
Stay tuned. This show may be on the air for
a while.
On cue: Will the real North Carolina quarter
back please stand up?
Saturday's grand premier in Kenan Stadium left
most with the impression that North Carolina cant
afford many re-runs. Re-makes, maybe. Re-runs,
"no.
Michael DeSisti
Kevin Anthony and Mark Maye each had his
moments during a 33-30 loss to Navy, and each
made mistakes. But neither sufficiently answered
the question collecting dust in the minds of so
many around this town.
Four days before the Navy game the initial plan
for replacing 1983 graduate Scott Stankavage, now
with the Denver Broncos, was announced.
"We told Mark and Kevin we were going to
go with Kevin early and then let Mark come in,"
said Randy Walker, the UNC quarterback coach.
"After that we didn't have anything in writing or
make anything concrete. We just decided to play
it by ear."
The song remains the same for this Saturday's
game against Boston College in Foxboro, Mass.
Anthony is scheduled to start, Maye to come in
early. After that it's anybody's guess.
But mostly Dick Crum's.
"It's extremely important at this point that they
both get experience," said the UNC head coach.
"As for the other 10 guys on the field, they're
comfortable with either quarterback."
What makes this situation unique among depth
chart duals is that it may present itself for the
next three seasons.
Anthony, a 1982 redshirt and Stankavage's
backup last year, will have two more years of
eligibility after this season. Maye, redshirted in
1983 after being recruited at Charlotte Independ
ence by most every major college in the nation,
will have three.
"At this point, I'm looking at it week by week,"
said Anthony, a native of Decatur, Ga. "But it
could change within a game. That's something I
understand and Mark understands. You just have
to get used to it."
What makes this situation sticky is that it's a
case where having too much talent is as much a
dilemma as it is a dream.
Kevin Anthony: A 6-2, 188-pound sophomore.
The more mobile quarterback; throws short- to
medium-range well on the roll out. Can run the
option. A heady player.
Mark Maye: A 6-4, 2 oound freshman. A
classic dropback passer with a classic arm. Can
run through people, fhey cast th mold with this
kid.
In a direct sense, North Carolina won't suffer
with either Anthony or Maye at quarterback. Both
can play, and their teammates will be the first to
tell you.
But the quarterbacks themselves might be
affected by a continual shuffle, especially when
the substitutions are unpredictable and irregular.
It's tough coming into a game off the bench;
coming in two, three or four times is that much
more difficult.
"You just have to try and keep your head in
the game more and wait for a chance to get in
there," Maye said.
Some logic: Too much substitution between the
two is bad for Anthony and Maye. What's bad
for the quarterbacks is bad for the team. Therefore,
too much substitution at quarterback is bad for
the team.
Hold the applause, please.
So playing it by ear might not be the best
method. But the alternatives are few.
Predetermined playing time: Anthony plays the
first quarter, Maye the second. Some sort of
substitution schedule of regular intervals. This will
eliminate the surprise element.
But at the same time, there's the risk of cooling
off a hot hand (e.g. Anthony vs. Navy: 7-of-7 for
116 yards early in the second quarter; Crum sits
him down for Maye to give the freshman his first
game experience).
A one-man show: Fiddle for another week or
two, then make a decision to play one or the other
until his performance necessitates a change.
The obvious drawback here is that chances are,
with Anthony and Maye, whoever's in the game
is going to stay there, which would leave an awful
lot of talent on the bench.
There is, however, another option.
The Non-plan: Make junior Wes S weetser, the
No. 3 man on the depth chart, the quarterback.
Start him for two years, and in the meantime come
up with something for these other prodigees. That
leaves just one year to pull hair, after which
Anthony will graduate.
And you thought Lombardi was ingenious.

usage. She said the fields were in
continual use from 3-10 p.m. daily, with
two teams per field. "(And) Rams Club
members park on the fields, leaving
glass, paper, chicken bones and tire
marks."
The SCC is looking for an alternative
field, and has an eye on the Finley Golf
Course fields, but nothing has been
finalized.
"The SCC is trying to get its own
field and we're behind them on that,"
Frye said.
In the meantime, the clubs will
continue to go without any storage
space until arrangements can be worked
out. Carmichael Auditorium has been
mentioned as a possibility once the
Student Activities Centers opens, but
Hutson said the SCC has been told not
to count on Carmichael space.
UNC Athletic Director John Swof
ford discussed that possibility with
1982-83 Carolina Athletic Association
President Padraic Baxter, but no
agreement was reached.
