Items of Interest John Irving, author of The World According to Garp and The Hotel New Hampshire will read from his works and discuss his writing Monday, October 1 in Kfomrtrial Hall at 8 n m Ward, UNC's first black mikeman, said last year that he considered his performances no different from those of mikemen in the past and added, "What it boils down to, I think, is that I cant do it and get away with it because I'm black," (D 77, Sept. 29, 1983). According to Yesulaitis, the admin istration received numerous letters and phone calls from irate alumni who felt Ward's mikeman appearances did not represent the best interests of the University. Following Ward's resignation, the cheerleaders led crowd participation cheers as a group on the stand usually reserved for the mikeman. UNC cheerleader Teri Parsons said, "No one really decided there would never be another mikeman, and the cheerleading squad is very open to whatever will best support our football players. Obviously, there is a need for something else, and our guys got a lot of verbal abuse at the UNC-Navy game. We're not trying to be mikeman, we Still need a parking permit? This Saturday our of our guys will be handling the microphone due to an injury." "They made a mistake when they chose Kenny Ward last year," 1981 mikeman Gene Krcelic said. Krcelic was mikeman as a freshman but lost the 1983 competition to Ward. Krecelic criticized the mikeman selection process as part of the problem. The cheerleaders, faculty, and band participated in the selection of the mikeman in the past. Krcelic said a more efficient way to select mikemen would be to include interviews as a screening process, in addition to the performance of routines. He also said it would be a good idea to pick 30 UNC students at random to serve on a panel, along with administrative- and student government repre sentatives, and cheerleaders. Yesulaitis said the trials were fair and were judged by a panel whose members were not allowed to consult with one another. Krcelic said it took someone who was outgoing and could "get crazy without intoxication to make a good mikeman. "A good mikeman adds a lot, and I hate to see the end of an important UNC tradition, Krcelic said. At the Tar Heels last home game in Kenan Stadium, it was not the spirit and enthusiasm of the cheerleaders that brought the crowd to high point of emotion, but the return of Lunsford. Taking the microphone, Lunsford led thousands of UNC students in the "Supersonic cheer." Some people have suggested the possibility of hiring Lunsford, who has graduated since his 1982 mikeman term, as the UNC mikeman, but the response to this proposal is likely to be highly controversial. Mary Sullivan, 1984-85 UNC cheer leader adviser, has requested that suggestions concerning the mikeman issue be sent to her at the student affairs office. The N.C. State Bar disbarred Coltrane after investigating charges that he engaged in unethical trust fund practices, said State Bar Trial Attorney Thomas Lunsford II. Coltrane, who has been Randolph County Republican Party chairman for 19 years declined to comment on the trial or whether he will appeal. Officials from the Randolph Bank and Trust Co. of Asheboro testified that Coltrane misappropriated money from clients' trust accounts, mixed their money with his own and failed to cooperate with the Bar's investigation. Lunsford said the money was returned to six of Coltrane's clients but the lawyer still owes more than $3,200 to the Randolph Bank and Trust Co. "He was using the money of one client to pay off another. The ultimate victim was the bank in Asheboro," Lunsford said. After five years Coltrane can reapply to the N.C. Bar, Lunsford said. Kathryn L. Hopper DTD from pag 1 they weren't able to survive as a fraternity . . . and the 70s was a tough time for fraternities in general," he said. He said the response to the recruit ment effort on campus has been favorable. "About 60 men have expressed interest." Kazarian said the local alumni were currently negotiating to take over the Pi Lambda Phi house on Fraternity Court. " - - i i From Rubens Restaurant...
