Daugherty and Popson combined for l6-of-19 shooting on the game. "We just had one bad run," said Fordham head coach Tom Penders. "But that's all it took. I knew we had to stay on top, because they had too much man power inside. When you live by the jump shot, you die by the jump shot." Fordham shot only 37.9 percent in the second half. "They didni shoot as well, but our defense was better too," Smith said. "Hale's defense . . . was just tremendous." Smith stuck mainly with his starting five of Peterson, Wolf, Daugherty, Hale and Kenny Smith. Popson scored his 14 points in only 16 minutes of playing time. "I started the lineup that was best defensively through the first six weeks of practice," Smith said. "Popson scored well. We want him to improve on his defense." Freshman point guard Ranzino Smith also contributed to the Tar Heels, scoring in his first game. Smith hit the first two shots of his college career in the first half, and finished the game with six points. Duke and North Carolina had taken turns fumbling and punting since the intermission when Tommy Barn hardt went back to punt for UNC at the Duke 45-yard line. His punt bounced at about the 10, apparently hit Duke defensive back Howard Woods in the back, and was downed at the two yard line by Howard Feggins. The officials called it Duke's ball at the two, then called a conference and reversed their decision, ruling that Woods had hit the ball and that it was North Carolina's ball. "I truly don't know what happened on that play," a beleaguered Sloan said. "That was a pretty big play." Two Ethan Horton dives over the top resulted in a touchdown, and it was 14 6, North Carolina. Miller had missed a field goal in the first half,' ending a season-long streak of 15 straight. The North Carolina offense con tinued to sputter, and UNC punted to Duke with just a minute gone in the fourth quarter. From there Slayden and tailback Stanley Monkled the Blue Devils on an 11 -play, 80-yard drive. With a third-and-goal on the UNC eight, Slayden went on a wild goose chase, being pursued by Micah Moon, and lofted a desperation pass from the 20-yard line that hit flanker Gary Frederick wide open for six points. A Slayden pass to Frederick for the two-point conversion and the tie was no good, and it was 17-15. A Johnny Hill interception of an Anthony pass set up Duke with the ball on its own 16-yard line with 6:02 left. A Slayden-to-Frederick bomb of 49 yards set up the 22-yard field goal attempt by Harper that ended in disaster for Duke.
