10The Daily Tar HeelThursday. December 6, 1984 SPORTS The Associated Press CHARLOTTE While the Atlantic Coast Conference is warming up for its intraconlerence basketball skirmishes, talk has already heated up about the NCAA's new 28-foot coaches' box. The box was designed to keep coaches from harassing the referees by requiring coaches to remain in a specific area along the sideline. Fred Barakat, supervisor of officials for the ACC, said the coaches are the most vocal opponents. "People who don't get up as much and are not as active think it's OK," Barakat said in an interview. "It evens things up at the other end if the coach is more active." Barakat said the rule has the potential for controversy. N.C. State coach Jim Valvano said the box is "the dumbest rule in college basketball." "I think it's an ethnic rule put in by Anglo-Saxons to punish Italian- American coaches," Valvano said jokingly. "It's like asking me to talk with my hands in my pockets. You can take a couple of steps to the left or right, but not forward. That's impossible for me. North Carolina coach Dean Smith made his objection simple. "I do not like it. It is unnecessary in my opinion," Smith said. The rule states that a coach, squad member or team attendant may leave the box if they are only seeking information from the scorer or timer during a time out. The only other time coaches and players can leave the box is to request a time out during a "correctible error," such as a clock or scoring mistake. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said he supported the rule, if it achieves its purpose. "If it makes it easier for them (the officials) to control the game or officiate the eame. then it's fine with me." Krzyzewski said. "I have no problem staying in the box." Television analyst Billy Packer said he didn't think the rule would last the entire 1984-85 season. "If the coach gets out of order, hit him with a technical," Packer said. "There's no need for the box. Part of the attraction for the fans in watching St. John's and Villanova is seeing Lou Carnesecca and Rollis Massimino running around." 28-foot box draws ACC fire Good fY A The only other UNC player to make either squad was linebacker Micha Moon, who was an honorable mention selection bv DPI.
