eels. Devils clash
From staff reports
The North Carolina Tar Heels have
moved to within striking distance of a
record almost unthinkable of being
broken during these times of balanced
power in the ACC.
With their win Wednesday night over
N.C. State, the Tar Heels picked up
their 22nd consecutive regular season
ACC victory. The longest conference
winning streak is owned by N.C. State,
which won 26 consecutive games over
the 1 972-73 and 1973-74 seasons.
Tomorrow, UNC faces a team that,
if history were willing to write a familiar
script, should allow the Tar Heels to
pick up win number 23. Duke, ranked
second in the. nation but coming off a
91-89 loss last night against Wake
Forest, has not won in Carmichael
Auditorium since Jan. 8, 1967, dropping
18 consecutive games in Chapel Hill.
But this time the Blue Devils come
in with their best team since the squad
that traveled to the national title game
against Kentucky in 1978. Last year, it
took a prayer shot by forward Matt
Doherty at the buzzer to send UNC into
overtime againtt the Blue Devils before

Where the Blue Devils are lacking in
size they have often been criticized
for being without a true center they
make up in speed. Johnny Dawkins and
Tommy Amaker in the backcourt will
be pitted against UNC's Kenny Smith
and Steve Hale, while forwards Danny
Meagher, Jay Bilas, center Mark Alarie
and hot-shooting, sixth-man David
Henderson Will face a much taller inside
game of Brad Daugherty, Warren
Martin and Dave Popson, with Buzz
Peterson playing small forward.
The game is scheduled to begin at
3:30 p.m., and can be seen locally on
WRAL, Ch. 5.
Elsewhere in the ACC, Virginia
travels to Clemson for a 1:30 p.m.
televised game while N.C. State hosts
Florida State and Maryland travels to
Nevada-Las Vegas.
In games of national interest this
weekend, No. 2 St. John's hosts No.
14 Boston College, No. 5 Memphis
State is at Louisville, and No. 13 DePaul
is at Notre Dame on Sunday.
