Martin not clumsy to the Wolf pack

In a three-minute span on a wild
Wednesday night, Warren Martin
, became one of the accepted heroes of
Carmichael Auditorium.
It started with 7:40 left in the N.C.
State game and State ahead, 58-57, as
Cozell McQueen lofted a shot in front
of Martin and unceremoniously had it
stuffed back in his face.
However, McQueen managed to
recover the ball. He drove inside and
' again tried to shoot over Martin, once
more receiving a facial for his efforts.
On State's next possession, after a
Brad Daugherty free throw had tied the
score, Martin dove for a loose ball by
the UNC bench, recovered it, and
launched a perfect outlet pass while
lying prone.
One possession later, with UNC
ahead by one, Martin took the ball
inside on Lorenzo Charles and scored.
And to cap off his burst of brilliance,
the next time UNC had the ball Martin
pump-faked Charles and McQueen into
the air, took one huge step and slammed
the ball home to give UNC a 66-63 lead.
Martin went out of the game 20
seconds later to a standing ovation from
a frenzied Carmichael crowd and a
rhythmic chant of " War-re n, War-ren."
No matter that Martin fouled out a
Miss Beverly Home Price, The Yucatan was
simply marvelous. I would have brought back
a souvenier but I'm not sure you would have
known what to do with it. Such a shame,
your mother taught you better than that.
Spinsterhood is a pain. Just remember,
auntie knows what's good for female troubles.

in UNC's nearly successful comeback
against SMU, and followed that with

that MartinX inside play affected his
team. "We started playing a little
tentatively," Valvano said.
According to teammate Kenny
Smith, Martin's rapid improvement
shows no signs of stopping. "At the
beginning of the year, Warren was
dominating the game for about five
minutes every night. Now he's domi
nating about 15 minutes. By the end
of the year, hell be dominating the
whole game."

Martin hit the floor hard and after the
game wore an icepack stuffed down the
back of his shorts, which he adjusted

sore spots in Martin's performance. "I
played well," Martin said. "It's my best
game, at least statistically, although
appearances can sometimes be deceiv
ing. If I can't find something wrong with
how I played, I'm sure Coach Smith

Such down-to-earth answers charac
terize Martin. When asked what he
personally remembered most about the

Whether Martin will continue to be
such an intimidating factor on defense
remains to be seen. Dean Smith was
pleased along with everyone else about
Martin's performance Wednesday, but
reminded the media that Martin hadnt
enjoyed the same shot-blocking success
against Jon Koncak of SMU.
"Warren's shot-blocking was excep
tional," Smith said. "I was planning on
him doing that against Koncak. Sam
(Perkins) says I can't shoot over
Warren and I don't think Koncak
can.' "
