Members of the team earned a silver trophy after surviving the Armstrong State Invitational with a 17-0 record. "I knew we would do well, but I didn't think we would win all of our matches," said team captain Jeff Carnes, a graduate student in classics from Detroit, Mich. Traveling coach and team manager Beth Weller, a senior from Winston-Salem, said she as well was somewhat surprised at the team's performance. "Everyone seemed to play better than expected," she said. "The guys meshed together well. The performance surprised so many because the team was put together only a few weeks before the tournament. Thursday was the first time the members had practiced together. Keith Brown, a graduate student in political science from Roanoke, Ala.; Adam Falk, a sophomore from Chapel Hill; Peter Weiss, a senior from Rosslyn Heights, N.Y.; and freshman Jon Baker from Baltimore, Md., make up the rest of the traveling team. This is Carnes' and Falk's second year on the All-Star team. The other members have participated on other College Bowl teams but never as All-Stars. In addition to UNC's tournament victory, Carnes was named to the tourney's All-Star team, composed of the four people answering the most toss-up questions. Councilman Broadfoot dead at 64 Chapel Hill Town Councilman Win ston Broadfoot, 64, died at his home early Tuesday evening. After completing an autopsy yester day, Dr. Robert Thompson, associate state chief medical examiner, said Broadfoot died from natural causes. Councilman Bill Thorpe spoke of Broadfoot as a "colorful figure" who loved Chapel Hill. "I enjoyed serving with him because I knew exactly where he was coming from," Thorpe said. "He was a very hard worker who was also highly opinionated." Under Chapel Hill's charter, the council will appoint a successor to serve the rest of Broadfoot's term. He would have been up for re-election this fall.
