4The Daily Tar HeelThursday, January 24, 1985 as Wrestlers head into ACC play "By BOB YOUNG Staff Writer With a Tuesday night demolition of Duke, the North Carolina wrestling team began its defense of the ACC team championship, a title which coach Bill Lam fully expects to retain. j "At this point in time Vd say it would have to be N.C. State, Virginia and ourselves, with Clemson and Maryland capable of jumping in there," Lam said. "Still, it's the best-balanced conference weVe had since IVe been here.": Lam thinks the Tar Heels tough early schedule will be a factor in their favor. But the tough competition also knocked North Carolina out of the top 20 ranking, something which Lam understands. " ; '. "We were 1-4 after our Midwestern tour, so we had to drop," Lam said. "But since then, weVe beaten Tennessee, which was ranked ninth. Navy, which was ranked 10th, Illinois, which was undefeated and Ohio State. Now we're 7-5, with two of our losses to third ranked Iowa. "I think the tough early-season schedule will help us better achieve our goals, which we set up as winning the ACC and placing in the top 10 in the nation." The toughest test to that first goal will come this weekend, as the Tar Heels face N.C. State for the first time this year, in Carmichael Auditorium. "Both State and Virginia have excel lent teams this year," he said. "Virginia beat State in the Virginia Duals earlier this year, but State was coming off a loss earlier in the day and they were down for the Virginia match." ft) if J fif'l,. ti ii i ill" M y A r V ' -, I';-, ' xY 7 rl j V v - - -.w:::.:&My...-.-... .-. .-.dit...:.:.:.:.:.:.:. v.v............ - --- HwniY' i ! But dont wait around for him to tell you. Palacio was a three-time state wres tling champion at his high school in New York, was named All-America there and, as a freshman at UNC, won the ACC tournament at 1 18 pounds. Palacio also boasts a list of injuries as long as his list of accomplishments. He was forced to redshirt last season when a hurt left knee that aggravated him during his freshman year worsened. Ready to go again this year, Palacio suffered a separated right shoulder as the season began. Now his right knee is beginning to show the same problems that his left knee gave him last year. But Palacio has kept quiet about the setbacks and is currently ranked sixth in the nation at 1 18 pounds with a 19-4 record. "He doesn't ever complain," North Carolina coach Bill Lam said of Palacio. "You know he's hurt, but you don't know how bad because he won't say anything. He just goes until his body won't go anymore." Palacio discusses the injuries matter-of-factly. He is more like a mechanic inspecting a beat-up classic than a person talking about his own body. "Last year I had to get (the left knee) 'scoped," Palacio said, referring to arthroscopic surgery. "But that didn't help because there was ligament dam age. The doctor said that it will never be 100 percent again. "It's a lot better than it was last year, though," he said. "This right knee is giving me trouble; (it's) the ligaments. It's a lot better now, and stronger. IVe been doing a lot of weights." Lam said doctors had told him Palacio's ligaments were already gone. "The doctor said we should keep him on a year-rojund training program," Lam said. "H's a tough kid." Even with j all the knee problems, Palacio still leads a talented Tar Heel squad. With Palacio at 118 and Chip McArdle at lj26, Coach Lam regularly counts on two early wins. "When I start figuring what matches we can win, I count on him," Lam said. "The tougher; the match is, the better he is. He's j best in high-pressure situations." j Palacio was recruited highly as a senior out of Long Beach, N. Y. Besides three state titles, he finished second in the national freestyle tournament in 1982. : Lam saw him wrestle in that tour-' nament and do well despite a hurt neck. Lam came away duly impressed, and his worries about Palacio being a small 1 18-pounder dissolved "We knew there would be a risk factor when we took him," Lam said. "He's frail, but we took a chance. We are sure glad that we dd." Palacio said his personal goal was to win an individual national champion ship. Lam thinks it is entirely possible. Palacio, though currently 6th-ranked, should move up to No. 4 when the next polls come out. "I don't think there's anybody in the ACC who can touch him," Lam said. "Hell be an ll-American for sure if he's healthy wlen the tournament starts. With a couple of breaks he could win it all. If he sjtays healthy, hell be a national champ before leaving." Palacio rernains true to his quiet nature when asked about such things. "I have no !idea how close I am (to a national title)," Palacio said. "I am improving, and that's good. A lot of guys get burned out as the season goes on." ! NORTH CAROLINA'S MOST EXCITING FILM SHOWPLACE "BEST FOREIGN FILM" L. A. Film Critics E3J 4:50 9:50 Daily OVER 17 ONLY "BEST AMERICAN FILM!"
