This unusual voice part, a male alto, will be sung by Steven Rickards of the Bach Ensemble. The concert's finale will be the famous Concerto in D minor for two violins, strings and continue This work, with its outstandingly balanced violin parts, is the first Bach concerto studied by Suzuki violin students and is a popular contrapuntal showpiece for concert artists. Another aspect of Bach's musical legacy, his organ works, will be in a Feb. 10 performance member Rudolph Kremer, who will play the Clavierubungy Part 3, at University Presbyterian Church. The work is a series of chorale preludes based on hymns central to the Lutheran mass. "This piece is one of Bach's heaviest and most sophisti cated," Kremer said. "He was a giant figure in organ music. No one can equal him in quantity or quality." Kremer will not perform on an antique instrument. However, this organ, "the best in the Chapel Hill area," incorporates mechanical action similar to that of the baroque organ. Compared to electronic action, this tracker action allows for some additional sensitivity on the "least sensitive of all instruments." Various other events celebrating Bach's anniversary will be held in the coming months. Excitement over this most famous of composers is understandable. He has influenced nearly every classical com poser, and his music has been updated to become enjoyable to every generation HAPPY BIRTHDAY RENEE! Felix Mendelssohn led the move ment to resurrect the work of a German considered old-fashioned even in his own time. The piece Mendelssohn used to present Bach to the world was the St. Matthew Passion. Much of Bach's work was in sacred music. To him, the aim of music was "the glory of God and the recreation of the mind." His career consisted of positions at various schools, churches and courts of minor nobility. Being orphaned as a child, fathering 20 children and losing his sight did not hinder his production of music. In sheer quantity, his output is remarkable. "He was a master of every musical form of his time and even created some new ones," said Richard Luby, artistic coordinator of the Society for Perfor explored by faculty SCOREBOARD Women's Basketball North Carolina 74, Clemson 71 CLEMSON(71) Janet Knight 8-20 2-2 18, Sandy Bishop 7-15 2-4 16. "He was incredibly consistent. His ability to write counterpoint and music of great emotional power is legendary." Like many geniuses, Bach was an eccentric character. He thought little of walking 200 miles to hear Buxtehude, a great organist of the day. Though Bach had a four-week leave from his job, he was so entranced by the organist that he stayed four months. Bach often annoyed his employers by writing hymn harmonies too complex for congrega tions to sing and by street fighting with a bassoonist he had insulted. Though he was better known in his lifetime as the father of several musically talented sons, today Bach is a corner stone of Western music. His brilliance has survived three centuries, and in all likelihood, it will endure for many more. Fencing Men North Carolina 14, N.C. State 6 Women North Carolina 9, N.C.
