Used records mean more music for less
By MIKE ALTIERI
Staff Writer j
Students wishing to enhance their record
or tape collections but lacking the bucks to
buy new material should visit one df the area's
discount record stores.
More and more used-record businesses are
opening in the area and the competition is
getting stiffer, said Dennis Gavin, who owns
two such stores: the Album Annex, located
on Henderson Street beside Henderson Street
Bar, and The Fair Exchange in Carrboro. The
Annex has been open. about 2'2 years, while
the Exchange has been for about seven.
"I think what differentiates me from other
area stores is that I pay cash for used albums,"
Gavin said.
The Annex carries used albums, tapes,
posters and some 5,000 45s. Gavin buys and
trades from individuals and offers a guarantee
on every album or tape bought.
"I'm very critical about the condition of
albums that customers bring in," he said. "I
put a lot of emphasis on good condition and
guaranteed good condition."
Dissatisfied customers have three days to
return their purchases and are entitled to a
refund or exchange, Gavin said.
The Annex's stock includes rock, jazz, soul
and soundtracks. Gavin said he did not
specialize in any particular area, but he does
carry some very old recordings, including The
Yardbirds and Chuck Berry. The Album
Annex allows customers to rent records for
$ 1 per night.
The Fair Exchange deals in used albums,
cassettes and 8-tracks. The store also sells used
books and paper collectibles such as comic
books. Employee Myles Friedman said there
were 3,500 to 4,000 albums in stock, and the
store would buy or trade used albums. The
Fair Exchange also offers a three-day
guarantee.

average album price is around $2.50 or $3,
and maybe $3.50 for current hits."
Book sales are a major part of The Fair
Exchange's business. Friedman said custo
mers could buy or exchange used books.
Comic book collectors may want to visit The
Fair Exchange and browse through the boxes
of comics. "Our comic books are probably
the most rare and collectible items we have
in the store," Friedman said.
Back Door Records, located at 136 East
Rosemary Street, is a small but thriving store
that deals exclusively in used and discount
merchandise and offers a wide selection of
jazz, rock and classical music. Owner Phil
Cowen estimates his stock consists of around
5,000 albums, 2,500 45s, and 500 cassettes.
Posters, picture discs and some 78s also are
available.
Cowan, who opened Back Door Records
two years ago, specializes in out-of-print
music and deals almost exclusively in used
records and tapes. In fact. Cowan used his
own record collection to help start the
business.
Available material at Back Door Records
includes old Beatles and Elvis Presley
recordings and other rock recordings from the
early '50s and '60s. Rare 45s and 78s also
are in stock.
To price items. Cowan uses a price guide
and considers condition and marketability.
Most prices are about one-half the album's

Cowan buys locally, but also welcomes
trade-ins and buys directly from the customer.
Cowan said he thought customers' best deals
came when they traded in items and he backed
his merchandise with a one-week guarantee.
"The demand for records and tapes is
always constant, but the supply cannot be
determined," he said. "At times it's hard to
get some things. There is a large number of
people who buy used albums. If you don't
. find what you are looking for, keep checking
back if possible, at least once a week, due
to the large turnover."
Back Door Records is open noon to 6 p.m.,
Monday through Saturday.
Schoolkids Records, located at 127 E.
Franklin St., offers used and discount
merchandise at what owner Pete Boston
claims are "the best prices in the state."
The store's used album stock is priced
according to condition and popularity.
Customers can sell their used albums or trade
in three used albums for a new one, but the
records must be in good condition, Boston
said.
The turnover for used albums is constant
and swift, he said. "We buy pur albums locally
and as soon as they are sold we have more
ready to sell."
Schoolkids' Records also devotes much of
its space to new album stock, which is bought
directly from record companies.
And Schoolkids' carries imported albums.
"Second to our used albums, the imports are
the biggest attraction," Boston said.
Also available in the store are compact
discs, blank tapes, and record care products.
Schoolkids' Records is open from 10 a.m.
to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
