The Stronger by August Strindberg, is the latest dramatic endeavor of the UNC Laboratory Theatre. The one-act play for two women will be performed this weekend. "The play is a wonderful challenge for both actresses," said director Kenn Russell. Senior Jennifer Deer Johnson and junior Stella Backler portray the show's two characters. The plot is very simple. Two women who have known each other for years meet in a cafe on Christmas Eve. The action stems from their realizations and accusations. "This play has been really interest ing," Johnson said. "There is little blocking to worry about. Rehearsals have been process-oriented." Backler also called the play an interesting experience and hard work. "The play is basically a confrontation between two women that will leave both lives drastically changed," she added. The Stronger, written in the 1 880s, was somewhat ahead of its time, according to Russell. "Strindberg foreshadows the stream-of-consciousness technique used later by writers such as James Joyce. This is an historically important play." Though Russell said the play did not have "a lot of dramatic action," he stressed that it still Had entertainment value. "The Stronger is a fun piece of theatre," he said. The Stronger will be performed at 4 and 8 p.m. Sunday and Monday in 06 Graham Memorial. Admission is free hut seating is limited.
