This was a major theme in the presentation of a rape awareness program Tuesday and Wed nesday nights. Tuesday's presentation, "Don't Be in the Dark: A Dramatic Presentation on Rape and Defense," sponsored by the Carolina Union Human Relations Committee and the Triangle Women's Karate Association, included a power ful film entitled KIAI. "Kiai means a yell, and it comes from a position of strength, not weakness," said Nell Archer of the Triangle Women's Karate Association. "Women can learn to defend themselves by yelling or fighting back." The film depicted women from a wide range of backgounds and ages who all wanted to learn self-defense. Beth Seigler, also of the Triangle Women's Karate Association, gave a lecture refuting many myths about rape. "Rapists are looking for a victim that (they) believe will be vulnerable and helpless,, and don't expect women to fight back," Seigler said. "Seventy-five percent of rapes in North Carolina involved people of the same race, and 48 percent involved an acqaintance." The Triangle Women's Karate Asso ciation also acted out actual instances in which women have fended off possible assaults. One woman scared off an intruder by pretending to telephone the police even though she didn't have a phone in her room. Another woman was walking to her car and noticed a man had been following her for a couple blocks. She decided not to go to her car and instead stopped to look in a store window. The man also stopped. The woman then Mia Farrow Jeff Daniels 2:15, 4:00, 5:45, 7:30, 9:15 n PiUAMA PART TONIGHT AT 9:30 "BZLICIQUSLY TERRIFYING. GUARANTEED TO AKE YOU JUiVIP OUT OF VOUR SEAT. The Carolina Union Weekly Features Committee and the Orange County Rape Crisis Center presented a followup program, "Facing the Possibilities of Rape," on Wednesday. Nana Dillinder, who is on the board of directors of the Orange County Rape Crisis Center, is also a companion. "A companion is more of a friend than a counselor," she said. "When a woman calls, we first make sure that she is safe," she said. "Then, if she wanted, we would then meet her in the hospital to help see that she is treated fairly, or just hold her hand. We will also go to court with the rape victim to help back her. In Chapel Hill, a high number of rape cases that go to court (result in) convictions." "In the UNC Memorial hospital emergency room, the real name of the victim is not used, to protect her," Dillinder said. "She can also request a female physician to examine her." "Self-defense begins in your head," she said. "You must realize that rape can and does occur. It's essential to remain calm, and turn fear, which is crippling, into righteous anger against your attacker. He is in the wrong, not you."
