Wake Forest jumped in front with single runs in the first and third innings. The Cavaliers got a run in the third, but the Deacons extended the lead with two in the fourth, another in the seventh and four more in the eighth. Wes Ragland went 4-for-4 for Wake Forest. Clemson 17, Maryland 12 Second-seeded Clemson smashed a tournament-record six home runs to erase an 8-0 deficit and defeat No. 7 Maryland. The Terrapins sent 12 men to the plate when they scored eight runs in the first inning, but Clemson slowly chipped away at the lead with solo runs in the first and second innings and two in the third. Maryland made the score 9-4 in the fifth, but Clemson scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 10-9 lead. In the seventh, Maryland regained the lead with three runs, but the Tigers came right back with three in the seventh and four more in the eighth to put the game away. Bert Heffernan went 4-for-6 with a homer and 3 RBIs for the Tigers. Georgia Tech 23, N.C. State 1 1 Buoyed by the home crowd, the Yellow Jackets set tournament records for runs and hits (27) and tournament records were set for combined runs and combined hits. N.C. State set a record for hits by a losing team with 22. Tech scored four runs in the first, one in the second, two in the third, eight, in the fourth, three in the seventh and five in the eighth.
