Silent Sam Nicknamed Silent Sam, a popular legend about this Civil War monument suggests if his gun does not go off when walking by him with a date, your date might not be as virginal as you thought. Silent Sam has been at UNC-Chapel Hill since 1913 to commemorate the 321 alumni of the University who died in the Civil War, as well as the 1 ,062 who entered the confederate army. It was erected by the North Carolina Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The plaque upon the monument's front face bears the figure of a woman calling upon a young man to put aside his studies and take up the sword. Silent Sam is located between the Old Well and East Franklin Street. Old East A national landmark on the UNC campus is Old East, the oldest state university building in the nation and a dormitory throughout those years. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 for its "exceptional value in commemorating the history of the United States." In the late 1700's, both the residential and instructional life of the University was centered in Old East. To get away from their fellowmen, students would erect huts in the forest and in the unfinished shell of South Building. When the weather was too bad for students to study in their huts, this was considered a valid excuse for unprepared lessons. The cornerstone for Old East was laid down on October 12, 1793 and nearly a century later that date was declared University Day. t ': i . :- 1.;f .:'g.i5 The Pit The most popular place to be during the day, where a crowd is always sure to be found, is the Pit. Whether for lunch, to hear a speech from a candidate, to watch and listen to a dem onstration, to hear music or evangelism, the Pit is the center of student activity on campus. It is a quick refresher during classes, or it can be leisurely excitement during lunch hour. The Pit is located in front of the Carolina Union and is flanked by Lenoir and UNC Student Stores. .-V4 I ' - w;.s, ... - 33iS - : f ' i jjy;.;..."- WW "J U,.WW """iiim ii. ii. i Li 1 1 m wi'"" '".""I """""'''M'h"J"W -- I - ' '' ' - ' PW 1 'live ky,; iViA I J y . -r,..,--' -- y wimij pirn TA! .
