Hanker, professor of dental research and biomedical engineering at UNC, said the process could be used for "re-anchoring loose teeth, reshaping bone in reconstruc tive and plastic surgery, patching holes in bone or building up the jawbone.? , Hanker said the- process, which should receive a patent later this year, is an improvement over bone graft ing, in which bone tissue from the patient's rib or hip is grafted onto the damaged area. With the new method, Hanker said, the patient need not undergo secondary surgery for bone extraction, and the process also eliminates the risk that the transplant will be reabsorbed by the body. Four survivors of Japan wreck Rescuers have found only four survivors of Japanese Air Lines Flight 123, which crashed in a remote mountain region of Japan. The other 520 passengers are believed dead in the worst crash of a single airplane in aviation history. Two women and two girls who had been sitting in the back part of the plane were admitted to Japanese hospitals after being airlifted from the crash site by helicopter. A faulty vertical stabilizer has been cited as a possible cause of the wreck. The stabilizer controls the ship's direction from the tail of the plane, and part of one was found at sea by the, crew of a construction tanker about 100 miles from the crash. Chapel Hill has received a $39,000 grant from the Institute of Museum Services.
