4 The Daily Tar HeelFriday. August 30, 1985 Werewolf fSBmni Backs Mi .4k By JIM GILES I here in always room Cor. another. uereuoM moie. It is a genre that is. b its er nature, hard to treat in a inildU entertaining fashion. However. Teenwolf. the newest variation of the werewolf movie, has nothing new or interesting to offer. Teenwolf is ' a low -budget comedy starring Michael J. Fox (of television's Family Ties) in the title role. His presence may explain why this movie, which studio executives were formerly hesitant to release, suddenly found theater space. With the phenomenal popularity of Hack to the Future. Fox is now considered a formidable box office draw. Unfortunately, his perfor mance in Teenwolf is not as charming as his Future portrayal, nor is Teenwolf in the same league as Fox's break through film. Fox plays Scott Howard, an average high school kid who must come to terms with the discovery that he is, genetically, a werewolf. The first 40 minutes of the movie focus on Scott's gradual change. Presumably, a werewolf's distinguishing features (fangs, ears, hair) don't surface until the last stages of puberty. Scott the. werewolf, however, is not interested in baying at the moon or cinema American Hoart Association WE'RE FIGHTING FOR YOUR LIFE 6 Ml chewing up peoples necks. He is a smooth-talking swinger who sports shades and a Walkman and is strangely accepted by classmates and townspeo ple. In fact, the "teen wolf becomes the school's basketball star and local stud, which improves the self-image of his rather dull alter ego. Of course, he ultimately must decide .. between the two personalities since his ( close friends feel deserted by him. The climax occurs at the "championship" basketball game, which director Rod Daniel stretches out over an impossibly long period of time with pointless slow motion shots. The screenplay's jokes aren't situa tional, nor do they fit into the film's dialogue. They seem contrived. But perhaps the kids flocking to the film don't mind. A group of . 8-year-olds behind me laughed hysterically when -Scott slid clumsily up and down a wet floor. Hilarious, isn't it? Teenwolfhzs none of the wonderfully self-satirizing material found in some classic werewolf movies, such as A n American Werewolf in London. Nor does it have the sophisticated special effects audiences have come to expect and demand, especially after American Werewolf and The Howling. The one wolf metamorphosis is only mediocre, . and all the others take place out of the . viewer's sight. r Children might enjoy Teenwolf but , anyone with at least a sixth-grade mentality will find it aggressively boring. The four-time national champion North Carolina women's team springs into action at 4:30 p.m., heading into one of its toughest schedules ever. George Mason will be the oppo nent, ranked No. 1 in preseason polls and an early test for the graduation-depleted Tar Heel team. North Carolina is ranked No. 5 in the country heading into the game. "Well be able to get a sense of where we are," North Carolina coach Anson Dorrance said. "Well see what we have to do to be competitive." The Tar Heels better learn quick. Dorrance said UNC is playing almost the entire women's top 10 this season in order to prepare them for the NCAA playoffs. As for being ranked so low after a 24-0-1 season in 4, Dorrance said, "I don't think they're (the team) concerned with the rankings. Their concern is to play as well as they can." North Carolina will be led . by wingback Stacey Enos, who just returned from a summer in Europe playing on the national team. Dor rance said that, "no question," Enos' experience gives her a key leadership role on the team. Midfielder Betsy Johnson and back Senga Allan are the only other two returning starters. April Heinrichs is back, but only at "80 percent," Dorrance said, after summer knee surgery. The loss to. graduation of seven starters, many, of whom were Ail Americans last year, should change some of Dorrance's expectations. "We aren't demanding they go undefeated," he said. "We appreciate someone else has the burden of being No. 1 and having to win every game." t, , The relatively new look of the women's team will be matched by the men's team, which opens its season Sunday as well, at 2:00 p.m. on Fetzer Field against Indiana State. Talk about youth. Aside from senior captain Mark Devey, the Tar Heels will field six sophqmores, three freshmen and a junior in their starting lineup. . .. ' Joining Devey will be some young talent in the forms of Dave Smythe, Tommy Nicholson and Reid Storch, . all of whom Dorrance mentioned as strong performers in practice. Vete ran defenders like Frank Gilhooly will help out: "WeVe had a real good presea son," assistant coach Geoff Griffin said. "There was a hard-hat mental ity in the practices." ., New faces on the Tar Heel team include Marcus Martin, a former all South player at UNC-Wilmington, Dino Megoloudis and Donald Coggsville. Also- playing will be Steve Daskall, who was injured' last year. : -' ' , "Our goal is to be consistently effective out there,7 Griffin said. "We want to get better every game."
