Fall 1985 Carolina Athletic Association PAGE 9 EAMIPAGE B8 . In recent years, Homecoming at UNC has been little more than a weak attempt to maintain a "tradition" that time has all but eroded. The social gatherings were usually only supported half-heartedly, and the parade was more akin to a funeral procession than to a festive celebration. Even the sacred tradition of the Homecoming Queen felL prey to this apathy when the student body elected a man as Queen. As tne uo-vice rresiaenis 01 me Carolina Athletic Association's Homecoming Committee, we are com mitted to planning and executing a Homecoming that is both exciting and fun. We realize that the sole intent of. Homecoming is to create a celebration that allows students to express their support for the Football Team while engaging in a little organized partying. Through our efforts, we hope to return this long neglected occassion to the level of enthusiasm and involvement it once enjoyed at Carolina. Our initial evaluation of the Homecoming activities from the years past provided us with many ideas and suggestions for events for the fall. While we were resistant to maintain any "tradition for tradition's sake," we did want to keep anything or event that seemed to be popular or successful from previous Homecomings. With all this in mind, the Carolina Athletic Association is proud to present "Rampage '85: A Carolina Homecoming!" TT : ..rill sin Wednesday, October 23, and will culminate at the Florida State Football Game on Saturday, October 26. (The week of Homecoming will be shortened by Fall Recess, which is Monday and ,; Tuesday, October 21 and 22). The events of the week will be announced as the time for Rampage '85 draws nearer, but for now, the following events are scheduled: PARADE This year, the parade will consist of floats, entered by dif ferent student organizations, The Marching Tar Heels and other marchers such as the ROTC programs, high school marching bands from around the area, and local civic organizations that may wish to be involved. This year, the materials for floats, including trailers, supplied, etc will be provided through the Homecoming Committee, so that only the construction and design of the float will rest upon the student group. A Grand Marshall will preside over the parade, and will be seated in a reviewing stand located on Franklin Street. The Grand Marshall will be an alumnus of the University, and will be recognized and saluted during the half time activi ties of the football game before they serve to crown the Homecoming Queen. The parade will begin on campus, wind through town and past the reviewing stand on Franklin Street, and end up in Ram's Head parking lot, where a pep rally will be held for the football team. The parade will start at about 3:00 pm and will end about 5:00 pm. HOMECOMING QUEEN -While this aspect of the Homecoming celebra . tion has a negative image as a result of an incident a few years back, it is the. hope that this event can be returned to this year's festivities in the proper respect and seriousness that this part of the "traditional" Homecoming deserves. A much more thorough procedure for nomination and selection of the Queen will be initiated, and qualifications will be broadened to include such qualities as campus involvement and personal amibility. It is the sincere desire of the Homecoming Committee that the recognition of the Homecoming Queen be more than the acknowledgement of the Carolina female student with the most voting friends. The rewards of selection will be broadened to include the reception of a scholarhips for the following spring, and the recognition of the Queen at other UNC events in the following year. POST-GAME EVENT-The Homecoming Committee would like to conclude the celebration of RAMPAGE '85 by sponsoring an event after the foot ball game. A concert to be held in Car michael Auditorium the night of October 26, which would feature the perform ance of a major entertainer. The Carolina Athletic Association and the Homecoming Committee wants to bring a Homecoming to this campus that will rekindle the spirit and enthu siasm that this event once held for Carolina. While we are committed to doing everything possible to organize and plan all the events for RAMPAGE '85 well in advance, we are still open to suggestions and comments on the aforementioned schedule. Since the week prior to the FSU game on October 26 will be abridged by Fall Recess, hav ing the plans for the events of RAM PAGE '85 set well in advance is crucial to the success of the celebration.
