4 The Daily Tar Heel Tuesday, September 10. 1985 S(O)Sfe0 umBy earned Fepe By TIM CROTHERS Assistant Sports Editor In the top of the fifth inning at Wrigley Field Sunday afternoon. Pete Rose lined a single to right field. It was hit number 4191 of his career, tying him pith Ty Cohh for the all- time hit record. Tonight, he will try to break the record in Cincinnati against the San Diego Padres. 4,3,2,1 . . . History. It is a countdown watched more closely than those of the historic Space Shuttles. This countdown to history is more human somehow. While Shuttle launches have been aborted and rescheduled for various reasons, Pete Rose's pursuit of the ghost of Ty Cobb and his record of 4,191 hits can only be described as relentless. If Peter Edward Rose is anything, besides a great hitter, he is controversial. Even the social baseball fan knows that Rose has a public relations problem, everywhere, except in his beloved Cincinnati. My experience with Pete has been in New York, one of the last cities he should consider when running for elected office. ' Pete's declaration of war came, during the fourth game of the 1973 national league championship series at Shea Stadium. In one of baseball's most infamous moments, Rose barreled into Met shortstop Buddy Harrelson in an attempt to break up a double play. Harrelson did not appreciate Pete's recklessness, words were exchanged, and a bench-clearing brawl ensued. An ovation of boos rained down on Rose as he trotted off the field. Pete was just leaving his calling card at Shea that afternoon, but the response, no doubtstuffed his P.O. Box in Cincinnati with hate mail postmarked the Big Apple. New York sportscasters still show that play sometimes when Pete comes to town, as if attempting to rekindle the city's fiery disgust for him. But attitudes do mellow over time, even in New York. This moderation of spirit was evident during Pete's last visit to Shea this season. Dont get me wrong, while Rose was making outs his first three times up, the hecklers rejoiced. They screamed, "It's past curfew at the old folks home, Pete," as he walked back to the visitor's dugout. But Pete's fourth and final time up, he ripped a double off the wall in right field. As Charlie Hustle stood at second base adjusting his fire engine red helmet on his dyed-brown page boy haircut, the Met fans applauded and some even stood. I thought about how ironic it all was, that this was the same base where he and Buddy had done the "danse opinion macabre" twelve years before, and now I was applauding him. Pete stood at second with a satisfied grin on his face. Surely, he was musing over the justification he must have received from the enemy applause. He had earned the respect of the New York fans almost despite himself. But mostly he was just pleased with the hit. The countdown had reached 33. Pete Rose does not need to break this record to establish his niche in baseball history. His plaque has long been cast at Cooperstown, just waiting for Pete to run out of gas. But Pete continues to disobey Father Time. Rick Reilly, in a recent Sports Illustrated cover story captured Pete's denial to grow up; "Rose still plays a child's game and plays it as though any minute hell get that dreaded call for dinner." It is this sincerity of affection that this man has for the grand old game that compels even the most stubborn baseball fan to begrudge Pete Rose his due. Students differ in views Here are some reactions from a random sampling of UNC students Monday in the-Pit; the day after Pete Rose tied Ty Cobb's all-time record for base hits, with 4,191. Interviewees were asked what they thought of Rose and of hi 23-year pursuit of the ghost of Cobb. Yogi Browning, Culpeper, Va.: I think he's overrated. I'd rather hear about a real accomplishment. He's good, but he's not great. He's not as good as Ty Cobb was. Sarah Nicholson, Charlotte: He's wonderful! IVe been a Reds fan since I could walk. I used to live in Columbus for ten years. He's like an institution. What else can you say? , Tom Brittain, Hickory: I'm glad for him. He's worked hard all his career, and he deserves it. Allen Hewett, Greensboro: People may have conflicts of personality with him, but that doesn't change the fact that he's got the all-time hit record, and for that he should be commended. Beth Ann Gawen, Fairfax, Va.: IVe heard of him. I know he's a good player. He does commercials, right? 8 POL-ITS Men's Soccer 2 -3 1 -1 Smyth; Friday UNC 3, Furman 1 UNC 1 Furman 0 Goals: UNC - Nicholson, Megaloudis, Furman - Anderson Assists: UNC - Moltzon; Furman - Todd Shots: UNC 1 8.
