Anthony played all of Saturday's game with a severe ankle sprain, yet set all-time UNC records for completions (31), attempts (53), arid yardage (302). His was only one of the ' more visible of a collection of gritty performances displayed by North Carolina, a team that was not so much outplayed as out-talented Saturday in a 23-13 loss to Louisiana State. The Tar Heels made comparatively few mistakes in the game. They only had one turnover, Anthony's 53rd pass of the game which turned into a meaningless interception. They capitalized on LSU miscues early, and generally played tough on defense. Eric Streater said last Tuesday that the offense would only need to score 20 points to win. That prediction was much closer than anyone who heard it would have imagined. LSU entered the season with an offensive arsenal that sounded like it would rack up points every time it touched the ball, if you read some publications. But the Tar Heels were somewhat effective in holding LSU in check except for Dalton Hilliard, who sliced and. darted for 142 yards and was labeled by defensive end Ron Burton as "much better than Napoleon McCallum." By all accounts UNC played better in its loss than in the Navy win. For three quarters the Tar Heels played the No. 10 team in the country evenly. It took two field goal attempts to finally turn the game the Tigers' way a 54-yard LSU school record by Ron Lewis to give LSU a 16-13 lead and a fake field goal attempt that almost resulted in a touchdown for UNC. -: ' -; Heir parents refuse lo gfoe blessings to daughter, hakdicappetd iiance By STEVE AUSTIN Syndicated Columnist Dear Steven: My fiance and I are both 26, in good health, have lots of friends, and have been living together for two years. I'm an interior designer, and he's a psychol ogist. Our problem: Jack was in an auto accident last March and lost his left leg. He's dealing with his handicap very well. ' We have recently set a wedding date for next June. Everyone is wonderfully supportive except for my parents. They believe his han dicap will prevent him from being a total husband, whatever that's supposed to mean. Before the acci dent we were all best of friends. Now, they find every excuse to avoid visiting us. We are going to get mat ried, no, ; matter . what' ariShe says. j But what - do -wei-have txto '." to convince my folks that Jack's handicap hasn't changed the inten sity of our love? In , fact, it has brought us even closer. We want their blessings. Please help. Confused Daughter Dear Confused: It sure sounds like a lousy mess. The key here is to get them over to your house for dinner or just a friendly get-together. If they cannot then realize that your love is as strong as ever, youll just have to accept them for what they are and go on. That would be sad. It's possible the upcoming wedding will knock some sense into them. Let's hope so. Good luck. WE Frfdatj, September 2 Memorial Wall 8:00 pm $730 Reserved Seating Tickets on sale at the .. Franklin St. (above straight up Dear Steven: While my husband was out shopping a few weeks ago, a woman with a very sexy voice called and asked for him. She sounded highly disappointed when I told her he wasn't in, and didn't say if she'd call back. She did not leave a message, only her last name. Although IVe never suspected my husband of fooling around, you never know about men these days. , This caller might have been his little sweetie calling to see if he could sneak out. Your silly detec tive fantasies can get you into more trouble than you bargained for. What if the woman on the phone was a business associate who needed to reach him in an emergency? As the ball fell harmlessly to the turf, so did UNC's chances for a major upset, one that would have catapulted them into the public eye and possibly into the Top 20 as well. . , But the game wasnt a total loss, for it should be referred to as the one that restored respect to Taf Heel football. UNC wont be able to sneak up on an unprepared Florida State or Maryland later in the year, because the team officially served notice Saturday that they can play with most anyone. If they were lightly regarded by LSU, no one else will make the same mistake. "In the back of all our minds was the thought that if we beat these guys we'd get back a lot of. the respect we lost in. the past," said Earl Winfield, who. caught 11 passes for 133 yards and juked an untold number of defensive backs. "We tried to earn LSU's respect, and I think we did," said Burton. Coach Dick Crum seemed as pleased as he ever has been about a 10-point loss. "The thing I liked about it was even when we got behind we kept playing hard and hung in there," he said. "IVe seen a couple of outfits here in the past, they get behind arid cave in on you. But we played them down to the wire." ' - .v -, ... ..... Player moods were similarly upbeat. "We snowed ourselves that we could hang with anyone," said Anthony, who also admitted he was having trouble walking after the game. "Considering who we were playing, we improved a great deal. We gave it all we got and when it came right down ip it we didn't have enough. r . Rarely has a double-figure loss been accepted with such a lack of frustration. ination a chance to run wild, you should have told him about the call. It's not too late to do. so. How he handles the news should give you a decent indication of what the story really is. That is, of course, after the shouting has died down. Dear Steven: My parents often make the mistake of calling my fiance, Jay, by my ex-boyfriend's name, Richard. I can understand their confusion to some degree, as they're quite elderly and often get the names of their own children and grandchildren mixed up. But Jay is fed up with them, and I can't say that I blame him. He won't say anything because he's afraid of hurting their feelings, so he's begin ning to take out his frustrations on me. This is1 "n'6Ta-'1ife'r"-death of it. Any suggestions? Name It, IU Try It Dear Name; He won't be out of line if he politely corrects them each time they make a mistake. You can do your part by using his name whenever possible. Go a little over board with it if you have to. As for his getting upset with you, I'd set him straight immediately. There's no excuse for it.
