John Trudell, a Santee Sioux orig
inally from Nebraska, gave the speech
as part of his Celebration of Life Tour.
The Carolina Indian Circle sponsored
his appearance.
"In the industrial society, we believe
that creating the biggest bomb and
spreading the most destruction and
terrorism is power," Trudell said. "But
it is not. . .
"We are part of the natural world.
The Earth is our mother! We abuse the
Earth, our mother. We can't solve the
problems of racism and sexism . . .
because they are perpetuated through
the way we treat the Earth."
Television conveys the image that our
lives would be better if we owned more
material things, he said. "It tells us that
our worth is what we buy."
He said no one should be deceived
into thinking that the pursuit of material
gains and achievements are what life is
all about. "We need to understand that
that's not what the purpose of life is.
That's not why we were created.
"The contradiction of education is
that it seems like we're being fed data
and statistics to help machines run, not
knowledge that will help us to be able
to live." '
Trudell said solutions to the problems
of Native Americans and of society
would come from the creative minds
of the people only after they open their
minds and take an objective look at the
world.
"We must remember that the Earth
is our mother and our life, he said. "The
Earth is consciousness. If we would
clean our minds and get in touch with
the consciousness of the Earth, our
power and sense of identity would come
back."
Trudell criticized the "one-God"
system. He said that God does play a
role in the universe, but only in
conjunction with the Earth. "As soon
as they told us that there was only one
God and that he was a jealous God,
everyone started turning against the
Earth.
"It was under the one-God system
that people were brought under con
trol," he said. "It is incredible the
number of wars and human sacrifices
that were made (to prove that point)."

Consumer prices steady
WASHINGTON The government
said Tuesday that consumer prices
increased only 0.2 percent in August,
the same as recorded in May, June and
July.
The four-month, low-increase streak
has held the annual inflation rate
through August to 3.3 percent, marking
a 13-year low.
