The Daily Tar Heel Friday, October 4, 19855 .n0iLP oliftcB(BDrs"::scsiry"" inniaiirDy.; nrcbD Dy WAYNE GRI?.SLEY Staff Writer They waited, all 16 of them, for the fish to arrive from the hospital. Some chatted about the, hurricane that never came, or sat down on the lone bench in the thin hallway of Binkley Memorial Baptist Church. On the left side were a large map of Chapel Hill and Car rboro and a small office that served as the local base for Meals on Wheels. On the right side were the bench and a table that had seven trays, each containing a destination sheet and bananas. The Bananas had replaced a dessert,. Jean Arnel, the leader of these volunteers, looked ' out the Hallway window that admitted a strong glimmer of the sun. It was a quarter to noon, and still no fish. Arnel's army was ready for another Meals on Wheels run. They deliver meals to Chapel Hill residents who are homebound, handi capped or convalescent, Arnel said. The volunteers serve 47 to 51 meals a day at a cost of $2.50 per meal, but sometimes they allow an unfortunate customer to pay nothing, she said. Many groups help Arnel. She said donations from churches, individuals and the United Way funded the pro gram. Also, Kroger's donates one-tenth of its collected receipts to Meals on Wheels. Arnel pays N.C. Memorial Hospital to supply hospital meals and make special diet meals for her customers, she said. Some moderate income persons use the service because they cannot make meals easily, volunteer Mary Lee Kennedy said. "Occasionally, a young person breaks a leg and he uses it," she added. The volunteers still waited for the fish. . Most of them were over 30. Kennedy said a 90-year-old woman delivered food for Meals on Wheels. Why did they come? I had free time," said Kennedy, a housewife. "I like to work. "I just wanjted tp.do something good, said volunteer Monte Waters, who has been with the local program since it started in 1977. uMy conscience," Jane Lehman said. UI love it," said another volunteer. "I get more than I give. The people grow on you." - Meals on Wheels started in England as a relief effort during World War II, Kennedy said. The program is a branch of the United Way. The fish finally arrived. The volun teers put the meals in the appropriate trays, and then they separated to differnt cars. Kennedy, Lehman and her daughter went on the same meal run. They had to wait for parents to pick up children at the Binkley parking lot before reaching their first destination across the street from Binkley church. Lehman left the car and delivered a tray with fish, mashed potatoes, beans and a roll. The first customer had Alzheimer's disease, Kennedy said, and could not travel across the street to get the food. Besides delivering the food, Kennedy Found: Bracelet between Peabody and Philips. It is helpful for someone to go into the homes to see if the customer's condition is deteriorating, Kennedy said. Often, they must report someone's bad health to a relative or a social service member. Recently, a Meals on Wheels volunteer discovered a customer dead in the home. The station wagon traveled on a rural route and reached the home of Mr. Sparrow. He wore a hat and glasses, and guessed what the meal was before opening it. "Fish," he said. Sparrow said he liked the service very much. They stopped at an apartment com plex to bring food to a woman who had emphysema. "She was in the hospital not a long time ago," Lehman said. The car traveled to the house of a blind man who Kennedy said had been attacked by a neighbor's dog while walking in his yard. Lehman delivered the meal and checked on the dog situation. The man said Meals on Wheels was the best thing that ever happened. "I get it every (week)day," he said. He also told Lehman that he had experienced no more problems with thedog. Another quick stop, and the meal run was over. The smell of fish had disap peared from the back seat. The volun teers would go back to the church and wash the containers. And perhaps they would feel better about themselves, or even believe that they got more out of the run than they gave. gUdsduw FEMALES (18-22 years) NEEDED FOR BONE HEALTH STUDY.
