a hiree offflead? pBays ffeMmed Sim The Daily Tar Heel Tuesday, October 8, 19855 By IAN WILLIAMS Staff Writer "An Evening of Tennessee Williams," a performance of three one-act plays . by the influential American playwright, will be presented by the department of dramatic art in PlayMakers Theatre. Featuring UNC undergraduates, the program opens Oct. 9 and will run through Oct. 13. The evening of theatre consists of the plays This Property is Condemned, The Case of the Crushed Petunias, and 27 Wagons Full of Cotton. These three works share the theme of a woman caught between fantasy and reality. Each play displays Williams' distinct skills from the poignancy of This Property is Condemned to the delicacy of The Case of the Crushed Petunias to the impassioned, Gothic world of 27 Wagons Full of Cotton. Ben Cameron, a UNC faculty member and PlayMakers literary manager, directs these three one-acts. He received his MFA from Yale where he won the first Kenneth Tynan Prize in dramaturgy. Cameron admits this is the most schizophrenic directing experience he has ever had. I direct three shows that are completely and totally different from each other," he said. " I go to rehearsal at 7 o'clock and rehearse an hour of 'brutality,' then suddenly on the stage is 'sweetness and poignancy'. . . it can be frustrating." Possessing the sensitivity of an autobiographical memory, Condemned relates the story of two adolescent outcasts who meet on a remote railroad track. Featured are uridergrads Mar garet Jemison and Kenn Russeli. Jemison, a senior from Birmingham, Ala., says that the play is sad, but that they "don't play for pity. The character I play is a real survivor." The second play of the evening, The Case of the Crushed Petunias, is a comic and delicate story owing much to the worlds of Frank Capra and Thornton Wilder. This lyrical fantasy involves the confrontation between Miss Dorothy Simple of Primanproper, Mass., and an intruder who tramples her flowers. Appearing in this one-act are Reed Edward Diamond, Tania Drummond, Joe Shugart, and Serena Ebhart. Ebhart, a sophomore from Raleigh, plays a character named Mrs. Dull. "This play is a bit lighter in nature and has more of an 'implied scenery', but our director Ben Cameron is great at getting what he wants," she said In contrast, 27 Wagons best exem plifies the tension between fantasy and reality that plagues all of Williams' major heroines. Powerful and intense, this last play follows the awakening of a woman caught between her husband and a plantation supervisor in their struggle for power. Featured are Fetzer Mills, Diana Osberg, and Jim Shores. An Evening of Tennessee Williams will be performed by the department of dramatic art at 8 p.m. Oct. 9 through Oct. 13 in PlayMakers Theatre.
