The Daily Tar Heel Thursday, October 17, 19855 Faoo expectag mmoire tthairo By MARTHA WALLACE Sutl Wntet I all is here again and with it another yearly tradition the N.C State lair. Running Oct. IK to 26. the State Fair has something to offer everyone. Last year, about 700.000 people attended the lair. This years turnout is expected to top 750.000. The S3 admission lee lets people visit 16,000 exhibits and enjoy the outdoor entertainment. The outdoor entertainment includes a beach band, the Coasters, who will be at the fair Oct. 18-22. Other attractions include a large group of country music bands playing in Dorton Arena. The week's highlights include Ray Stevens, Tammy Wynett, the Judds, Reba MacCentire and Ronny Milsap, who went on to fame from his home state of North Carolina. If country music isn't your bag, the State Fair offers Exile and the Florida Boys. "We've expanded old exhibits, added new ones and arranged entertainment to suit everyone's tastes," says June Brotherton, director of public affairs for the fair. Besides the exhibits and musical entertainment, more than 125 food stands are planned. The culinary delights served at the fair include fried dough, steak fries with vinegar and old fair staples such as cotton candy and foot-long hotdogs. The fair has more than 75 rides, most of the spinning variety. As a rider faces fellow fairgoers in terror, the foot-long he just ate is ready to jump ship. Ride booklets cost $6 and contain 25 tickets. Each ride costs two to four tickets. "U depends on how gut-wrenching it is," Brotherton explains. But that's just part of the fair. After braving the Pirate, you might want to relax and enjoy the scenery. Some people come to sell swine, others to bake pies and more to attend the sound and light shows and ride the roller coasters. The exhibits contain the biggest and the smallest of whatever you want to see the biggest shark, the smallest horse, and, of course, the fish-girl. It's alive. Each exhibit costs a few more tickets, but patrons can win their money back, or try to. There are opportunities to throw a dime on a plate for a stuffed monkey or whack-a-mole for a plastic frog. Those less athletic, or looking for a sure win, can have someone guess their weight, age, etc., and win a stuffed banana if the guess is off by five or 10. Fairgoers can end the day with the nightly firework show at 10. After walking miles laden with a stuffed zoo, they can walk to their cars in the moonlight serenaded by Roman candles, sky-rockets and M-80s. (Ear Heel Stereo Problems?
