The Magnum T. A. R. Heels of North Carolina against the Boogie- Woogie Wolf pack of North Carolina State. Fourteenth versus eighteenth in theJJ.S. of A. Itll be the Chapel Hill Wrecking Crew of Al Palacio, Lenny Bern stein, Rob Koll, Tad Wilson and Joe Sihestro against the Raleigh Road Warriors. It will be a WAR. . . -. While there probably won't be any Airplane Spins or Atomic Drops in the match, it will be one of the most intense matches either team will have this season, if last year's battle in Chapel Hill was any indication. The match went down to the final weight class, where N.C. State's Garrett Keith pulled out a win over Stacey Davis and gave the Wolfpack a 20-19 victory. Oops, the actual final score was 19-18, because both teams were penalized a point for "unsports manlike conduct." This year's first tussle (the teams will face off. once more in Chapel Hill in February) should be just as close, according to Tar Heel coach Bill Lam. ' "N.C. State has an excellent team this year," he said. "We're going to have to wrestle very well to beat them." Lam says the matches at 118, 158 and 167 are must wins for the Tar Heels, and the battles at 134, 142 and 177 will probably decide the team winner. Wrestling for UNC at those divisions will be Palacio, Koll, Wilson, Enzo Catnl p-ctein and 7 :,m mmmO BARGAIN MATINEE ADULTS $250 TIL 6:00 PM EVERYDAY! Palacio, the defending ACC cham pion at 118, goes into the match ranked seventh in the country. His record of 22-3-1 gives him the second-most wins by a Tar Heel this season. Koll, the sophomore All America at 158, is the team leader with 23 wins. He is rated fifth nationally. Wilson, another All America, has compiled a record of 17-7-1 so far this season. But the men with the mission are Catullo, Bernstein and Silvestro. "We really have to win at least one of the matches at 134 and 142," Lam said. "Those matches could be the turning point in the match. And the battle at 1 77 will be a key battle also." But while the entire match will be intense, it is not particularly mean ingful in the long run. After all, it's still the regular season in a sport where the conference tournament is all-important. And the ACC tour nament has belonged to UNC for the past two years. It is a streak that Lam fully intends to keep intact. "I feel good about our team and the way we're wrestling right now," he said. "I think if we can stay healthy we should be able to defend our title at the ACC tournament." Oops (again). The match with N.C. State may not be all that crucial for the team, but it does have some importance. If the Tar Heels win, it will be Lam's 150th career victory in his 13 years at North Carolina. Isn't that right, coach? "I guess so," Lam said. "I saw that written in a press release somewhere so I suppose it's true. And if I'm going to get it, I'd just as soon get it down there as anywhere else." ELLIOT ROAD. E.
