Greene To the editors: We are writing this letter to express our support for Jimmy Greene, candi date for student body president. Jimmy is an experienced and enthusiastic candidate. He has served for nearly two years on the Campus Governing Coun cil and is currently speaker of the CGG. While on the CGC, Jimmy has been one who has been there when needed. He has been a fair and hard-working member of the CGC and is supported by several members of the council. Jimmy also has served for the past year as chairman of the CGC committee ' on campus security. As chairman, he initiated and organized the Campus Zemp To the editors: Once again, the time has come for students to choose their leaders for the coming year. It seems that the problems facing the candidates this year are the same ones that surfaced in last year's election: the mandatory meal plan food service, parking, divestment and student empowerment. It is time to elect a leader who has solutions, someone who can get things done. Jack Zemp is such a candidate. , Jack Zemp has answers and concrete solutions to these problems. He has plans of bringing competition into the campus food service. He has developed parking solutions and ways to fund Brady To the editors: As a concerned student of this campus, I would like to voice my opinion on the race for the student body presidency. I would like to express my support for one of candidates, David Brady. David is the only candidate that has visited every dorm and has knocked on every door on this campus. He has done this because he is greatly concerned with maintaining close contact with the students themselves. In his mind, if the Student Government does not exist to serve the needs of the student body, then it should not exist at all. For that very reason, David plans to initiate a weekly article in the DTH to report relevant news concerning the activities of the Executive Committee and the Student Government to the student body. David has tremendous experience with the Student Government. He was in the Campus Governing Council and was appointed to the position of finance committee chairman. As chairman, David had to perform the mammoth task of allocating nearly half a million dollars to various student organiza tions, and, as far as I could tell, he did an excellent job. To the editors: This year, many students have com plained that there is no way to tell the difference between candidates for student body president. While it is true that many of the candidates take the same stands on the issues, only one candidate, Ryke Longest, stands out through his involvement in Student . Government, having worked in various capacities under three student body presidents. This makes him different because he has has on-the-job training. Working as student body treasurer, he had to train and supervise the working of treasurers for the Student Government funded groups. This involvement took him 20-30 hours per week of work and trained him in how to supervise people and work with administrators. He has also proved himself as a candidate who makes students aware of problems. As a CGC member from Morrison and Hinton James, he intro duced the first bill in last year's session to call attention to the implementation of the mandatory meal plan. By being the first to direct attention to the issue, he started the presidential candidates talking about the issue. Ryke is concerned about the conver- sion of dormitories into office space. gesr Write in Jarvis Broadway i o tne eaitors: Ever since my freshman year here at Carolina, I have been looking forward to participating in Senior Class activ ities. Now my first chance to do so comes in the form of boting for out class officers. Although there will be no candidates on the ballot for the offices of Senior Class secretary and treasurer, there are two noteworthy students running a write-in campaign for these offices, Jackie Jarvis is running for the position of Senior Class secretary, and Patrick Boradway is seeking to fill the role of treasurer. I have known both Jackie and Patrick in and out of class for almost three years. They were both involved in dorm government, worked Jones for RHA To the editors: The Residence Hall Association has done too little for too long. Should we put the same people back in? Isnt it time to elect someone with the back bone to make RHA responsive to students, not just Housing? It takes more than just ideas; it takes a president who has proved his leadership and ability. Ray Jones has the ideas and the answers and the solutions. As president of Avery dorm, he led the kind of government that made a difference in residents' lives. As RHA president, he will see that RHA is not a puppet of Housing but will answer to students for for SBP Watch program. He also worked with the administration to increase the lighting in several areas on campus. As one can see, Jimmy has had invaluable experience in Student Government. This experience has given him the knowledge of the system and what makes it work best. Jimmy's experience makes him qualified to hold the office of student body president. Vote Jimmy Greene for student body president! Charles Bryan ToddPatton Jim Wooten CGC representatives for SBP them. Zemp is aware of off-campus student problems, textbook prices and campus security problems. He has the determination to give students their rightful voice on campus. Jack Zemp is the man who can get things accomplished. He is not one of the Suite C politicos who have brought us the current atmosphere of student helplessness. The student body of this University cannot afford another press chosen friend of the administration. The students of this University deserve someone who can get things done. The students of this University need Jack Zemp. Max Lloyd for SBP of this campus is superb. He knows all the people who are involved with the Student Government and many of the school administrators who formulate the policies that affect the student body. And finally , but most importantly, David is truly dedicated to us, the students. He knows the needs and problems that concern the average student. For example, he knows of the incredible problems students have with parking on campus and has suggested a solution for it that may not be completed during his administration but would eventually alleviate the problem. He proposes to build a parking deck in South Campus or near the Bell Tower that would provide many more parking spaces for the students. He also realizes that there is a problem of high textbook costs and proposes the minimum-use textbook policy, which would require professors to use text books for at least two semesters and therefore allow students to sell their textbooks. David is truly dedicated to the student body, and I know without a doubt that he is the most qualified of all the candidates. Frank Kevin Yoo Lewis rtnyr ta HTC1 w '-.vv: "This is another issue that he wanted to raise public awareness about while there is still time to change opinions at the administration level about it. Other candidates have not addressed this issue. They do not see the importance of fighting on issues that won't affect the campus for three or four years. That is the attitude that allowed the man datory meal plan to be put in place. The administration does its decision making 5-10 years in advance on many issues. It's time that the student body president start doing the same thing. Ryke has proved his concern for student issues through his long service in Student Government. Since his freshman year, he has been fighting against those who would ignore student input. His experience has taught him the tactics and given him the tools to fight most effectively for student input. In campaigning for Ryke, it has been brought to my attention that he is not the "cutest" candidate. I will not challenge this conclusion, but I question whether we need a cute presidency. I believe we need an effective presidency. For this reason, I'm votirig for Ryke. .V. ,vtti u : Kevin Cook Chapel Hill as Orientation counselors, ana have been members of various ' social and service organizations on campus. Jackie and Patrick are two , of the most innovative, hard-working, determined people I know. They dedicate them selves fully to any project they become involved with and will do their best to make it work. Having a strong love for Carolina, Jackie and Patrick are willing to do their utmost to make next year out best year yet. Show your concern for our Senior Class and write in Jackie Jarvis for Senior Class secretary and Patrick Broadway for treasurer. Marcia Scribner Chapel Hill a change. If you want to see these ideas in action, put Ray Jones in action as RHA president. The time for change is now. R. Anne Mcintosh Jimmy Randolph SBP -I'm r- Hassel To the editors: Now that students have demon strated this semester a concern for re establishing a voice for themselves on campus, there is no better time to elect Bryan Hassel for student body presi dent. Bryan has the clearest focus on the changes thai must be made to make Suite C an effective and representative organization. The foundation of his campaign is based on action, research and realities which best demonstrates, above and beyond his opponents, a pure vision of why Student Government exists: to be the students' advocate, first and foremost. Bryan cares about students and the rights of students. His experience is not in Student Government directly; con sequently, he does not have a "Suite C mentality that is often associated with career student politicians. I have come into contact with many people who have impressed upon me a keen sense of justice, representation and energy with regard to student action and participa tion. None have captured my attention and confidence as much as student body president candidate David Brady. Campus politics aside, I can verily say that no one has been more directly involved with, concerned about and responsive to the common student's needs as David Brady has been. It is Hassel To the editors: In the past two years, I have given much thought to the concept of Student Government at UNC, its nature, its purpose and how it can be more effective. The end result of my thinking and discussions with many different people is that for Student Government to realize its full potential and to have a real impact on this campus, it is absolutely imperative to have a strong, capable student body president. I am personally acquainted with all of the candidates for SBP. Although all of them have their strong points, one candidate clearly stands alone above the rest. Bryan Hassel is that candidate. Bryan epitomizes the qualities it takes to make a good, even great, SBP. He has intelligence, insight, integrity, concern and organizational ability that he has shown over and over through his involvement in Student Government and other campus organizations. Bryan understands the issues, knows the direction, and has the leadership and dynamics to make things happen. We have a choice to make today on how our Student Government will be run. With a vote for the career poli tician, we will get the status quo which is OK, but nothing new. With a vote for Bryan Hasel, we will get a student body president who has made a career out of fighjing for students' rights, rather than one who has begun .to talk about them now that we are nearing election time. I urge you to cast your ballot with good conscience, for a good cause, for David Brady. Thank you. Randall Sprinkle Chapel Hill for SBP Almost more important than expe rience in the executive branch, Bryan possesses a streak of stubbornness, which is vital for dealing with a sometimes hostile and intransigent administration. Bryan has included in his platform concern about the mandatory meal plan, support for the UNC Drug and Alcohol Outreach programs and ensur ing the students' voice is heard in issues affecting them. Bryan has worked closely with me on these issues for the past year. They are real concerns that he has given much time to and will continue to do so long past the election. I endorse Bryan Hassel for student body president in the strongest terms, and I urge you, the students for a strong, effective Student Government to elect Bryan Hassel as your student body president. Fetzer Mills Chapel Hill 'ZT'SD'J 7)s- 5 15 The Daily Tar Heel Tuesday; February 4, 19867 Venablel Killough for seniors To the editors: We believe that the RHA should not show favoritism toward candidates for Senior Class president vice president. However, since Don Courtney and Jane Miskavage find it necessary to solicit endorsements from selected Governing Board members, we feel compelled to express our support for David Venable and Michele Killough. Throughout their campaign, Venable and Killough have shown their firm knowledge of issues concerning both the present and rising senior classes. The information they presented on topics such as senior preregistration priority, the class gift and the class trip has been consistently accurate. In fact, to our knowledge, they have yet to retract a single statement because of misinforma tion. (We wish this were true for their opponents.) Another key factor in this team's qualification for president vice presi dent is Venable's stong record of leadership at UNC. As governor of Morehead Residence College, Venable has helped create, organize and carry out successful programs and events for area residents. In support of this claim, one might simply note that its candidates are allowed campaign budgets exceeding those of all others except student body president. Its significance is also manif est in the number of students it affects: . The DTH is the most widely distributed source of news and forum for ideas on campus. The responsibility is obviously a great one, and as informed and concerned students, we feel that Jim Zook is the obvious choice for DTH editor. We reached this decision because we recognize that Jim possesses attrib utes that combine the past, present and future to provide the best candidate for DTH editor: experience, dedication to excellence and vision. Jim Zook has experience. He is a junior who has worked with the DTH since his freshman year; the Arkansas Gazette, summer of 1985; Newsweek On Campus, April 1984 to the present; and the University News Bureau, August 1983 to the present. Jim Zook is dedicated to excellence. Merely cranking out a newsaper day after day is not his objective for the DTH. Jim wants the students of UNC Mi, n2f. WrJkK RECRUIT U.S.A., INC. These reasons notwithstanding, the integrity alone of the Venable Killough campaign is sufficient to justify their election. They have limited their forum discussions to matters concerning the Senior Class not stooping to deliver personal attacks against their oppo nents. In addition, they have expressed enthusiasm for including the entire class in developing proposals for class projects. They have not attempted to create a pat, soft-sell platform based on a few preselected topics (e.g., new bells in the Bell Tower). Venable and Killough did not approach us for his letter; we wrote it out of our own initiative, and it does not constitute an official RHA endor sement. But we recommend the Vena bleKillough team for Senior Class president vice president with the high est level of confidence. Tim Cobb Rick Cody Jammie Eubanks Maria Kenny Courtney Sanders to read a coherent, progressive news paper that informs students not only of campus news, but also of broader, far-reaching issues that affect us as young adults. This is evident in Jim's campaign commitments to increase state and national news and to begin regular meetings with Journalism School faculty for educated insight in producing a high-caliber product. Jim Zook has vision. Recognizing that UNC has one of the most reputable schools of journalism in the nation and that, correspondingly, the DTH is very well respected among college newspap ers, Jim has specific goals designed to uphold this prestige. One of the keys to this is assuring that the paper is an efficient business operation, providing the paper with a sound financial base on which to build successful papers long after he has left. The DTH has a great responsibility to the students of UNC. In turn, we have the responsibility of selecting a capable editor who will best serve our interests. As students concerned about the quality and direction of the DTH, we support Jim Zook for editor. Mike Dockery Jim Rogers John W. Williams Continued on page 8 1
