The Daily Tar HeelFriday, February 7, 19867 n n w O O :. Q O Q Dy MARX MATTOX StaffWriter "If five people come up with a consensus, you should live with it," said Paul Thompson, leader of the UNC Writers Group. The group, which has been meeting once a week for about five years, is an informal forum for critique of short stories and novels written by members. Originally organized by Max Steele of the English department, the group's membership has included writers with out a college degree as well as those with Ph.D.s in English. "It (the group) gives me a chance to try out things," said two-year member Frances Hess, "and get immediate feedback." Hess, a personnel assistant in South Building, said the criticism allows her to find her biggest strengths in writing. "I think we know each other well enough that it (criticism) has to have a certain validity." The current membership of 10 includes two undergraduates, several University employees, and a few retired individuals, most of whom are trying to get published. According to Thompson,"A profes sional writer is someone who makes more money than he spends on postage." , Several members have left the group for other projects, including one who is working on a master's degree in creative writing at UNC-G. . Carol Klein, a former member cur rently working on a novel, enjoyed the diversity she found working in a group, u'fcnce membership's age range from Goode 19 to 65. "Because of life experience," she said, "people develop in different ways." 4 Currently, members of the group are each writing a short story from an abitrary genre outside of their special ties as a skills exercise. The genres include romance, science fiction, humor and the surreal. "It's a way of putting yourself in someone else's mind," Hess said. The group meets every Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in 321 Greenlaw, occasion ally inviting guest speakers such as Bland Simpson, author and creative writing instructor in the English department. All writers and would-be writers are encouraged to join. "We don't provide discipline," Thompson said. "This is a support group." from page 1 ination firsthand in his youth. He has had to deal with racial violence during his term as mayor as well. Racial violence occurred frequently in Philadelphia in 1985. In May, members of the radical MOVE organ ization, a group of blacks who followed a back-to-nature philosophy that included recycling garbage and human wastes in their homes, were driven from Film their headquarters by a police assault. Goode approved a plan to drop a bag of water-based gel exlosive on the roof of the MOVE house. The bomb, apparently fueled by explosives already in the building, caused a fire that destroyed 61 buildings and left 250 people homeless. Philadelphia also received national attention last year when a black family's from page 1 Having grown up in Argentina, Epstein was very familiar with life there. "The situation was bad," he said. "Since 1930, we never had a government that finished its term. There was always a military coup. Recently was the first time we ever voted in an election. Especially bad was the period between 1976 and 1983, which was called the 'Dirty War. Thirty thousand people disappeared, although there's no exact figure. "The school system was like our society was. It's changing now. You can see in the movie how history was taught. There was much censorship. You Americans cannot understand. You're so used to democracy." That fact notwithstanding, Epstein believes Americans will be able to relate to The Official Story, which he calls "a reflection on everything that's happened. It can be understood by anyone. It's mostly about a mother's love for her daughter. And there are missing children in America." attempt to move into the white Elm wood neighborhood was blocked by residents. He said he was not surprised by the conflict in Elmwood, saying racially intolerant neighborhoods could be found, in almost any major city. "The leadership must say we won't tolerate this," he said. Goode told the reporters that much of the neighborhood destroyed by the May fire has been rebuilt, adding that he hoped all the houses would be finished in the next 60 to 90 days. r 1 Campus Calendar Friday 7:00 p.m. Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship-AH Campus meet ing, basement of University Methodist Church.
