4Tha Daily Tar Heel Wednesday, February 19, 1986 w w- W" it 4 Tar Heel swnmmeFS close IBowmaini Gray, scHttle Fadk This week's UNC Athlete of the Week is long overdue. We of the DTH sports staff have been oohing and aahing over the exploits of Bill Lam and his team all season and without further ado we salute the team of the week; the UNC wrestling team. The seventh-ranked wrestlers put an exclamation point on a super 17-3-1 season by clobbering llth-ranked N.C. State 37-3 last Friday night. The 17th win added to what was already a record number of wins in a season for UNC wrestling. Here's to all of you. May you keep your names in the headlines and your backs off the mat. FAIR Staff Writer On a cool, brisk evening in February the UNC swimmers and divers sank the N.C. State Wolfpack 80-33 and in the process made history in two ways. This win was the largest ever in the 47 years that Bowman Gray Pool has been open, and it helped the pool close on a positive note. Next year, the North Carolina swimming team is scheduled to compete in a new natatorium that is still under construction next to the Dean E. Smith Student Activities Center. ' V-., y The previous largest margin of victory held by the Tar Heels was in 1942 when they defeated their arch rivals by a score of 5946. The Tar Heels went into last night's meet on positive note, hoping to defeat the Wolfpack after losing to them in November, said Billy Williams a junior" swimmmer from Rocky Mount. The team of Chris Stevenson, Doug Sawyer, Dirk Marshall and Larry Bloch got the Tar Heels off to an early lead by winning the 400-medly relay in a time of 9:26.33. This first place finish was one of many to follow. ' After losing to the Wolfpack once the Tar Heels did not want another defeat. "We got beat pretty bad by them and we didn't want to lose again," Williams said., V' .y':H. ..'.L----' "Since this was the last meet in Bowman Gray Pool it was an incentive. We wanted to get back at them (State)," .said Daryl Johnston, a freshman swimmer from Wilmington, Delaware. The Tar Heels dominated the meet by winning eight individual events and two relays. Williams, along with fellow - teammates Clay Wellborn and Steven son won two events each. Williams won the 200 IM and the 200 breaststroke, Wellborn the 500 and 1000-yard freestyles while Stevenson took the 200-yard freestyle. : Stevenson, who is and an alumnus of Sanderson High School, swam the last home meet of his Tar Heel career and finished on an backstroke and a Raleigh native u D ''"'""' --"" "' uoii ;at.. Stevenson, who said momentum played a big part in last night's victory over the Wolfpack, has swum for different swim teams all across the country and in 1984 swam for the Greek national team. "Everyone was really together for the last meet. We had a lot of momentum for it." With the ACCs within two weeks, things are looking pretty good for the Tar Heels, said UNC coach Frank Comfort. "We look a lot better than last year at this time. We're where we want' to be." A lot of people are swimming well and they are more advanced as a team than in the past, Comfort said. With this win the Tar Heels upped their record to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference. Both the teams will compete in the ACC Championships February 27 March 1 at Charlottesville, Va. Drawing 'R ' us It's the last day to apply for the newly established sports cartoonist position at the Daily Tar Heel. What a great chance to let everyone see your sports-related drawings. And you don't even get paid for it. What it boils down to is this: We need a sports cartoonist to draw for the sports page, either a comic strip or occasional cartoons for sports-related articles. There's a lot of room for creativity. Interested? Come by the DTH sports office and talk to Sports Editor Scott fowler from 3-6 p.m. today. Please bring several samples of work and all the ideas you can come up with. (3 ELLIOT ROAD at E. FRANKLIN 967-4737 $2.50 TIL 6:00 PM EVERYDAY!
