The Daily Tar Heel Wednesday, April 2, 19863 laughter S 4 idol's steps By MARTHA WALLACE Staff Writer Had Frank Porter Graham known he was to be Jim Slaughter's idol, he would have been very pleased. Slaughter steps down today as president of the UNC Young Demo crats, following Graham's achievements with impressive ones of his own. While earning his rank as class valedictorian at Brown High School in Kannapolis, Slaughter was developing his fervent interest in politics. ulVe always been very interested in the Democratic Party and active at the state level," Slaughter said. After joining the UNC Young Demo crats his freshman year, Slaughter hoped to strengthen what he considered a stagnant organization. He got his chance when he was elected club president in 1985. 1 wanted to dispel the general feeling that the UNCYoung Democrats' Club was weakening," Slaughter said. "The party, and the club is as strong as ever we just needed to get people out every week to the meetings. " And get them out he did. Slaughter and other club members searched the freshman record for young Democratic Party supporters. The Eagle Boy Scout brought in such speakers as former Gov. Jim Hunt, Lt. Gov. Bob Jordan and Attorney General Lacy Thornburg. Poorly attended bi weekly meetings became popular weekly sessions. The UNC chapter is the state's largest with more than 75 paid members. The club's "call bank" has 350 individuals who are contacted before each meeting. And the results are in. At the annual convention of the N.C. Federation of Young Democrats in February in Hickory, the UNC chapter was voted Club of the Year. The man behind the success, Jim Slaughter, received the federation's best president award. "Jim just ignites a great deal of energy into the club," said Patrick Bradshaw, the club's out-going treasurer. "There is no one who is more efficient than r - - frv i - v . . If his track record is any indicator, Slaughter should have no trouble generating support for the Democratic party, and . . . perhaps some future votes? Post-Law School, Slaughter plans to pursue a career in "government service and politics." But some of his friends are more specific, predicting the senior will probably appear on a future gubernatorial ballot. Jim as a leader." ' And although his Young Democrats term ends today, Slaughter is by no means through with politics. "I am going to UNC Law School in the fall, and one of my goals is to get the law school and its students more involved with the Democratic Party," Pressure Boys, dB's canceled for 'Burnout' The dB's and the Pressure Boys will not play at Pi Kappa Phi's "Burnout" April 11. The Pressure Boys cannot play, because guitarist Bryan Settle was arrested by the Navy and charged with being absent without leave. John Plymale, the band's singer, said Settle would not be away from the band long. "We're waiting a little while for him to get back," Plymale said. "Hell be back. There won't be a replacement guitarist, and the band won't disband." The dB's canceled all of their April concert dates to record an album, said J. P. Hunter, promotion director of radio station WZZU. Brice Street, 37 Target and The Other Mothers will replace the Pressure Boys and dB's, said John Barkley, Pi Kappa Phi's Burnout chairman.
