8The Daily Tar Heel Thursday, April Campbell goal of improvement. M can'i really fill Walt s shoes, and I'm kind of happy no one's put that kind of pressure on me." he said back in October. "I'm just learning my role here. It's a little different. The speed and selection of the pitches is harder, and there's a sharper break on the curveball. I'm just adjust ing to it. 1 can improve in everything, especially my hitting. " The hard work paid off. According to Roberts, shortstop was up for grabs when the fall season began, and it was Campbell who took it. "Darin made the most progress. He just had an excellent fall," Roberts said. "He has an outstand ing attitude, a real desire to be above average. We're very proud of the shortstop tradition here, and we think in Darin we have someone with ability levels in the same realm as Chris (Pittaro) and Walt." Too often, words like desire, hard work and great attitude are bandied about to disguise a lack of ability or to pretend that a player adds to a team in emotion what he takes away in terms of producing runs. With Campbell, such is not the case. He combines tremend ous skill with tremendous desire, and his coach can but smile at the results. Campbell has already proven that he can hit and run exceptionally well, and he has quelled any doubts about his arm with his powerful throws from deep in the hole. As for power hitting, Roberts thinks that will be along soon enough. "Once he learns to get the bat through and pull the ball," the coi.ch said, "he will hit for power. He has that potential." That leaves fielding, the one part of his game which has been less than excellent for Campbell this spring. To tell the truth, his glove has been atrocious at times, and he's had 16 errors through his first 26 games. Of course, with his quickness Campbell gets to balls others wouldn't reach, and his arm lets him make throws when other shortstops would have to eat the ball. Still, the miscues gnaw at him. "1 feel I'm playing well, but I'm still making too many errors," Campbell said. "It's funny, because the throwing's been fine but my fielding has been bad. It's definitely just a matter of concentration." Given everything else he's done so far, it similarly seems just a matter of time before Campbell's fielding gets in tune with the rest of his game. And once that happens, can it be long before his middle name becomes "consensus Ail American"? NCAA adopts S-poDEt!; sHnoS From Associated Press reports DALLAS - The NCAA men's basketball rules committee today joined the NBA in adopting a three-point field goal and agreed to use instant replays to check scoring and timing errors, rules committee director Dr. Edward S. Steitz said. Under another rules change, coaches no longer will be charged with a technical foul if they leave the coaching box to protest errors involoving timing, scoring or alternating possessions. Steitz said the three-point goal was adopted by the 12-member committee following a five-year experimentation among 20 conferences. He added that it was hoped the new rule, which will credit three points for any shot made 19 feet, 9 inches or more from the basket, would ease the rough play (TJlie latlij Classic! Reaction to the decision was less than enthusiastic, though. Digger Phelps, head coach at Notre Dame, expressed surprise at the new rule and questioned the need for more changes in the game. "It would be nice, one of these years, to let the game settle down and see what we really have," Phelps said. "If anything needed to be addressed it's still the foul situation at the end of games." In a decision springing from the infamous "15-second omission" in the Kansas-Michigan State game, the committee also approved the use of instant replays to correct timers' and scorers' mistakes and malfunctions of the clocks. Steitz emphasized that replays would not be used for any other officiating questions. far BM Adverfein Now buying albums, tapes, CD's. Best prices in area!
