4The Daily Tar HeelTuesday, April 8, Positive thinking on the new YouVe heard a lot of the arguments by now for and against the three-point shot that will be used next year in col lege basketball. Mostly against. We e just had a year of no chaos and now we're introducing chaos Mike Krzyzewski, head coach, Duke. The last thing I want is a three-point shot Don Monson, head coach, Oregon. I'm not in favor of it. If you have a good game, why mess around with it anymore? Jim Boeheim, head coach, Syracuse. HI tell you why, Jim (and what war did you serve in, anyway?) The three point shot is the best thing to come along in college basketball since Bones McKinney's witticisms for a number of reasons. The best reason is that it will be good for North Carolina's basketball team in the immediate future. With the loss of Brad Daugherty and Warren Martin inside, UNC could get smashed around a little inside, especially if Chris Washburn doesn't go pro and teams with Charles, Shackelford again for N.C. State. So let Jeff Lebo and Kenny Smith pop from outside and loosen things up a little. Probably Joe Wolf can occa sionally pop one in from 19 feet, nine inches. And Ranzino, who has never been hesitant about firing it up, now will have more cause to do so when his bombs may connect for three points instead of two. Second, Dean likes it, and if Dean likes it, we should all like it. "When we used a 19-foot three-point goal in the ACC in 1983rwe had great games. The fans and players loved it, and that's what the game is for," Smith said. It's also easier to like it if youVe got Jeff and Kenny from outside. Gymrmasts take From staff reports ' MORGANTOWN, W. NBA Three-Point Held Goal Line J 23'9M Scc'J Fovjlor The Far Sideline Remember now, this isn't the same thing as what the ACC experimented with in 1982-83. If you remember that season, the three-point line was less than 18 feet from the goal, which made it just about within reaching dis tance for players like Sam Perkins. This one is more of a real man's shot, although still not rivaling the NBA's macho 23 feet, nine inches. One of those new stars to rise from the northeast mecca of the lacrosse producing state of Maryland is John Scv pinski. a name as troublesome for sportswriters as a Duke coach we know. A name also as much trouble for defending goalies as a Ford from the past or a Seivold of the present UNC team. So far this year Szczypinski has scored nine goals as one of UNC's rare starting freshmen. He leads the team along with Gary Seivold and Chris Galgano. another talented freshman who holds the kind of talent needed for a championship team sometime in the next three years. My goals are coming from assists." Szczypinski said. Tm at the right place at the right time. 1 give almost all of my credit to my teammates." "Most players probably don't think of him as a freshman on the field," junior attackman Gary Seivold said. "In practice he never gets rattled and we've got some of the best defensive players around. He's one of the easiest attack men to work with I've ever been around." So how did this young phenom of the lacrosse world reach this level of achievement? He began playing lacrosse at the tender age of eight and was on his way toward a youngster's dream of playing in Division I. He continued playing through high school where he also wrestled for four years and played football for two years. But lacrosse was his first love and Boy's Latin High School in Timonium, Md.. was the beneficiary of that affection, achieving a No. I state rank in Szczypinski's senior season. He was also named to the second team all-metro team his senior year and was ranked as the No. 2 attackman in the state. "My high school coach helped me a lot," Szczypinski said. "Starting my sophomore year was pretty tough, but my junior year was easier because another guy helped me out. Our high school hadn't won a championship in 16 years and I thought it was about time we won another one." He brought some good fundamentals to UNC to work with according to Coach Willie Scroggs. "He's fundamen tally very sound and doesn't make many mistakes." Scroggs said. "He's -left- NURSING BOARDS REVIEW NCLEX PREPARATION FOR PEOPLE WHO CARE! "Teaching's grand and glorious, because I get to tell you what I believe," Cameron said. When lecturing on Oedipus and Hamlet's longing for Ophelia, he said he revealed his feelings. "My political beliefs don't matter, but what 1 long for and feel, you hear from me in every class," he said. When telling stories about his grand daddy and when his father gave him raw horseradish telling him it was coleslaw, Cameron said it was his students' reactions that inspired him to tell of his personal experiences. However, his son chose UNC instead. "It was a pretty easy transfer down here because all of the older guys helped out the younger guys," he said. "The coaches also had a conference at the beginning of the year with us and that helped." Besides playing lacrosse, Szczypinski and his three brothers enjoy boating, lishing, scuba diving and skiing. "He admits he is just a laid back kind of guy who likes to hang out with the other lacrosse players. Coach Scroggs said his quiet, unassuming manner has helped him on the field greatly. Seivold said, "He's the kind of guy who's not real vocal on the field but controls the tempo by the way he plays." I just want to play the best I can at all times," Szczypinski added. "I don't see any reason why we can't win it all this year. We Ye got a lot of talent." Scroggs says Szczypinski has his best years ahead of him and if that is true the team should do well and has a good shot at winning it all. "Life is too short to be serious and too short to be frivolous," he said ."Whatever you should be, is a person who engages in what he or she is doing." Although he didn't have two or three children like his father, Cameron said, he felt like he had 2,000 children. He didn't think his students were kids, he said, but he felt like a parent because he was able to pass his values on to them. "I'm sort of in love with my destiny," Cameron said quoting author Isak Dinesen. He said he, himself, had the best of all possible worlds. "You have a mission to share your luck." Finally, quoting Alastir Reid's "Curi osity," Cameron said, "Curiosity won't cause us to die only lack of it will." After wishing his students joy in whatever they gave their lives to, pride in themselves, and pride in their curiosity, Cameron said, "I promised you all I'd do this I wish you all a good night," and he threw his red tie to the audience.
