6 The Daily Tar Heel Wednesday, April 9, 1986 , Alumnus to perform at UNC after 40 years By MARK DAVIS Statt Writer Richard Adler graduated from UNC in 1 943 and began a successful musical career that has spanned everything from Broadway to ballet. Now, more than 40 years later, he's back in Chapel Hill and trying to give something back to the school he loved. Adler recently received the William Neal Reynolds Residence, making him an artist-in-residence at the University. He is currently speaking to classes in drama, music and RTVMP: "1 wouldn't call it teaching but discussing," Adler said, adding that he hoped to enlighten students, if he could. Adler will give a performance tonight at Hill Hall in which he will sing portions from some of his famous compositions and talk about his career. The concert is being presented by the music department. Adler started the Fine Arts Festival at UNC and was inducted into the Order of the Golden Fleece. He wrote his first major play, "The Pajama Game," in 1954, followed by "Damn Yankees." In 1979, Adler wrote "Yellowstone," his first symphonic work, and in 1983, he received a commission from the Department of the Interior to write a symphony, which led to "Wilderness Suite." Recently, he finished "The Lady Remembers," a 42-minute piece with seven movements dealing with the Statue of Liberty, and he has just completed a ballet which will soon be performed by the Chicago City Ballet. Adler said he didnH enjoy writing for Broadway as much as he used to. "It's not as exciting as writing for the big Avoid the Jottery blues Apply now! All apartments on the bus line to UNC. "1 think the trend is moving toward tuneless musicals," he continued, adding that a few of the recent Broad way works he did enjoy were "A Chorus Line" and "Jesus Christ Superstar." Adler has also written movie scores and several works for television includ ing "Little Women" and "Gift of the Magi." Adler said one of his biggest disap pointments had been never winning the Pulitzer Prize. "IVe been nominated four times and have never won it," he said, adding that he doesn't expect to ever win it. He has won numerous other awards, including the National Park Service Honorary Ranger, a prestigious award whose recipients have included John F. Kennedy. In 1984, Adler was inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame. He has also won two Tony awards and one Emmy. He said, however, that the award that probably meant the most to him was the Golden Fleece at UNC. Despite his success, Adler said his main goal was to write better and keep improving. His advice to young writers is, simply, to write. Wednesday night, Chapel Hill wih have an opportunity to see a man who has done just about everything there is to do in his profession, and, at the same time, will have a chance to welcome back a local boy who has made more than good. Richard Adler will speak and per form tonight at 8 p.m. in Hill Hall Auditorium. BrOOkS from page 1 habitual viewing of pornographic magazines and films increased. "1 started getting heavy into porno graphy. . . . The mind is just like the body. It gets addicted to things." He said that the pornographic mate rial contributed to his "odd sexual desires." "1 saw the movies and something inside of me said they're doing it, why can't you do it. There's nothing wrong with it." Brooks now concentrates on Chris tian witnessing within the prison, attempting to forget his sexual crimes. "I'm trying to let that part of me die. . . . God has brought me to my knees and brought me back up again and I'm not the Mike that I used to be." HDnranrnrnn Ihna n n "fin nn n Ol 7 um n rent Annette Garcia Tucson, AZ Work. Share. Save lives.
