FACE award to be given May 2 By MICHELLE EFIRD Staff Writer The Peggy Award for Communica tions Excellence (PACE), given to an outstanding woman in the field of communications, will be awarded May 2 at the annual Salute to Communi cators dinner at the Hotel Europa in Chapel Hill. The banquet will be given by the Triangle Chapter of Women in Com munications, according to the president of the group, Marilyn Riederer. Karen Hayes, director of commun ications for Gov. James G. Martin, will be the guest speaker, along with Valerie Thurrnan, the executive director for Women in Communications Inc., Riederer said. Also during the meeting, past recip ients of the PACE award will be honored. Ten women have received the honor including, Gerry Gentry, an editorial writer for the Durham Sun, Betty Hodges, women's page editor for the Durham Morning Herald and Shirley McKneely, president of McKneely Communications of Chapel Hill. The PACE award was started in 1977 in honor of Peggy Mann, a professional communicator who died of cancer in 1981. Riederer said as of last week four women had been nominated for this year's award. Nominees may come from fields such as television, advertising, , newspapers, public relations and jour nalistic teaching. They do not have to be members of the club, she said.
