Downtown Franklin Street and the
Forest Theater will be the scene of the
second annual "People's Prophetic
Parade and Festival for Peace, Justice
and the Environment" on Saturday.
April 12.
The parade, known locally as Apple
Share, will follow the successful
format of last year's event but is
scheduled to include entertainment
such as dancers, mimes and folk
musicians as well.
Ed King, Apple Share spokesman,
said everyone is invited to the festival,
which last year brought together over
250 participants. King said he expects
about 400 to 500 people this year.
"The main objective of Apple Share
is to bring together the many activist
organizations and individuals in the
Triangle area in one large parade and
festival," King said. "There is empow
erment and mutual support in
numbers and in unity which we can't
always enjoy by acting alone."
All local groups dealing with any
aspect of peace, justice or the envir
onment are invited to join the parade.
Simply being present, organizers say,
is an affirmation of concern to make
a way for peace, to encourage the

Those interested should gather at
9:30 a.m. at the Lincoln Center on
South Merritt Mill Road. The parade
itself will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will
proceed down Franklin St. to the
Forest Theater.
The outdoor theater will then be the
site of the festival from noon until 3:00
p.m. At that time, balloons carrying
messages of peace will be released.
A group of local school children will
be performing a skit related to the
parade's theme, and King said anyone
who wanted to would be allowed to
perform at the festival.
The benefit concert that followed
last year's parade is not included in
this year's festival, King said, because
the emphasis is not on fund-raising.
King said while the parade and
festival have roots in issues that are
deserving of demonstration, the goal
of the event is to be more prophetic
than anything else.
"Rather than protest, we're stressing
more imaginative and creative ways
to illustrate how people feel about the
country and the direction in which it's
headed," King said. "The use of the
arts is important."

thought it would be worthwhile to
bring all those people together and
celebrate their creativity with the
community.
Marion O'Malley, director of the
N.C. Center for Peace Education,
said, "This is not a fund-raiser, but
a 'consciousness-raiser' and a
'community-wide support builder' for
all issues of peace, justice, hunger and
the environment."
King, who also directs Church
World Service's CROP programs in
the Carolinas, said the coming
together of small groups into larger
coalitions would make their efforts
more effective.
"Not all the world's hungry live in
Africa," King said. "One out of every
seven North Carolinians goes to bed
hungry several nights a month."
King said 40 percent of those people
were too old, too young, too sick or
too handicapped to hold down any
job at all, much less a subsistence
paying one.
Other groups planning to join in
include the UNC Anti-Apartheid
Support Group and the Carolina

Sarah Brady, wife of presidential
press secretary James Brady and board
member of Handgun Control Inc., said,
"I thought it would be a little closer."
Her husband was seriously wounded in
the March 1981 attempt on President
Reagan's life.
In Wednesday's debate, Hughes said,
"The issue boils down to who we're
going to support: the police or the NRA
and their self-serving interest."
Rep. John D. Dingell, D-Mich., a
member of the NRA national board,
said the Volkmer bill "does not make
it easier for criminals to get guns" but
protects "law-abiding" citizens from
burdensome regulations.
Rep. William M. Hendon, R-N.C,
asked the House to uphold the Volkmer
bill "for the good old boys in rural
America who deserve reform of the Gun
Control Act of 1968."
Rep. James A. Traficant Jr., D-Ohio,
a former sheriff, said the Hughes
language could "give a psychological
edge back to our police officers."

The Washington, D.C.,-based Amer

soon establish a branch in the Triangle
area, said Kathy Davis, a field repre
sentative for the organization.
The 1986 AYH Handbook describes
hostels as "inexpensive, dormitory-style
lodgings with separate bedroom and
bathroom facilities for men and women,
a kitchen and a common room for
socializing."
North Carolina presently has five
hostels, located in Bakersville, Blowing
Rock, Dillsboro, Pembroke and
Wesser. Davis said the system of hiking
trails in North Carolina made the
hostels appealing to those who enjoy
outdoor activities such as camping,
hiking and canoeing.
