The Tar Heel Thursday, May 29, 198615 By EDDY LANDRETH Staff Writer OK, you latent Boston Red Sox fans, pull out those dusty caps and don them proudly. Forget Bucky Dent. Forget the 76 Cincinnati Reds. Yaz is gone, but the mighty new Sox are here. There are new heroes to worship in the temple known as Fenway" Park. One-fourth of this season's games have been played, and the Red Sox sit atop of the American League East. They are leading the league in hitting and ERA. It should come as no great surprise that they would lead the league in hitting; the Red Sox have had many great hitting teams over the years. But for them to have this type of pitching is something new indeed. They have the pitching marvel of the year in Roger Clemens. Earlier this year Clemens struck out 20 . batters out in one game, setting a new major-league record for a nine inning game. He struck out 10 or more in four straight games, tying Recruits rated No. 1 By EDDY LANDRETH Staff Writer North Carolina's basketball recruiting class of 6 has been rated number one in the nation. The prize catch was everyone's player of the year - forward J. R. Reid of Vir ginia. The Tar Heels also signed 6 10 center Scott Williams of Califor nia, 6-8 forward Peter Chilcutt of Alabama and 6-4 guard Jeff Denny of Winston-Salem. Reid has excelled in the post season games in which he has played. His play has been described as a man playing with boys. He should make an immediate impact on the Tar Heels, with the loss of See RECRUITS page, 18 "ONE OF THE FINEST Andrew Sards, VILLAGE VOICE A SPARKLING GEM" -Judith Crist. WOR-TV WHAT A PLEASURE" - -Mike Clark. USA TODAY an American League record. Cle mens also leads the majors with eight victories against no losses. But, this Boston staff is not a one pitcher staff. Despite all of Clemens' accomplishments to date, Bruce Hurst leads the team in ERA and the league in strikeouts. Hurst has only three victories, but if he continues to pitch this way, many more are almost sure to follow. Wade Boggs leads the team in hitting. He won the league batting title last year, for the second time in his short career; he has never hit below .325 in the major leagues. Boggs has become a good defensive player at third base. He led the league in chances last year and committed only 17 errors. Much of the credit for the Sox's success this year has been attributed to designated hitter Don Baylor. Baylor was acquired earlier in the year in a trade with the Yankees and was said to have made an immediate impact on the team, from a lead ership standpoint. Aside from lead ership, Baylor will provide addi tional offensive punch so this has to be rated as a great trade for the Red Sox. The Sox are in what is probably baseball's toughest division, so if will be a season long struggle to top the East. But BoSox fans take heart, if they continue to master all phases of the game, as they have so far, Fenway could be home to some baseball in October.
