in the Tar Heels finishing the decade
like they started it: repeatedly
reaching the Final Four.
Last year's top recruiting class
belonged to Louisville. Just a little

Former North Carolina pitcher
Scott Bankhead made his first
major-league appearance May 25.
He pitched four innings of relief for
the Kansas City Royals. He was just
recalled from the minors a few days
before. Earlier in the year, Bankhead
held the Royals scoreless for seven
innings, while pitching for his minor
league squad in an exhibition game.
It was rumored that he was on his
way up.
Last year's number one draft
choice and former North Carolina
catcher B.J. Surhoff was named the
Milwaukee Brewer minor-league
player of the month for April. He
hit .436 and drove in 10 runs.
Surhoff could make it to the parent
club this year, probably in Sep-

photographs, and of dialogue and

Kuhn said Monday that listing
pornographic materials was part of
the panel's mission.
"They were a fact-finding com
mission. This was part of the fact
finding," she said. Kuhn said explicit
descriptions were provided in the
reports because when law enforce
ment agents are seeking to prove

But, Lynn said, "I cannot imagine
that this commission which claims
to believe that distribution of sexual
material is a national menace would
reprint what amounts to a national
bibliography of porn, with graphic
descriptions of every conceivable

Kuhn said the report and lists
were based on investigations of 16
adult bookstores in several cities:
Washington, Baltimore, Miami,
Philadelphia and Boston.

chased or obtained from the United
States Postal Inspection Service, the
United Sates Customs Service aid
state and local police agencies that
has been seized or otherwise
obtained during the course of official
investigations of commercial obs
cenity sales and distribution,"
according to the report released by
the ACLU Monday.

difference between the sexes.
"Contrary to popular belief, there
seems to be no evidence to suport
the theory of male superiority at this
age," she said.
Benbow said her studies looked
only at the brightest children 7th
graders who scored in the top 3
percent on standardized tests.
Those youngsters were given the
math portion of the Scholastic
Aptitude Test, an exam usually
taken by high school juniors and
seniors. The boys consistently out
performed the" girls, and the gap
widened at the very brightest level.
Scores range from 200 to 800.
Among 12-year-olds who scored
over 500, there were two boys for
every girl. Over a 600 score, the ratio
was four to one. And over 700, it
was 13 to one.
Benbow examined whether

upbringing or some other, social
factor could explain the boys'
superiority.
She said she found no significant
difference between boys and girls in
their attitudes toward math.

The Training program of MSC
offers classes, presentations, and a
software library located at 232
Davis. Students can check out
computer programs on floppy disks
after signing an agreement not to
copy them. There are also many
software programs designed by
UNC professors for students in
English, math, chemistry, psychol
ogy and many other subjects.
Parker said the computer labs are
becoming increasingly popular
among students. Students usually
first come in to use the facilities after
a professor makes an assignment
that must be done on a computer.
The students soon come to prefer
to use the personal computers for
other assignments, she said.
The microcomputer center in the
Undergraduate Library opened last
fall and has since served over 6,000
people.
The microcomputing facility
located in Room 307 of Venable
Hall opened in the spring and over
10,000 people have used it in one
semester, Parker said.
