The Tar HeelThursday, July 17, 19865 Police searclh for lead in sexuial : assault off-student By DWIGHT MARTIN Staff Writer No arrest has been made in con nection with the May 20 sexual assault of a UNC student, but a Chapel Hill Police Department investigation is still in progress. On that date, an assailant forcibly entered a UNC School of Law student's apartment, sexually assaulted her and burglarized the apartment, Lt. Authur Summey, Chapel Hill Police, said. The assai lant was armed with a knife. Police prepared a composite sketch of the assailant using the victim's description. The assailant is a white male between 25 and 30 years old, 5 feet 7 inches tall with a slender to medium build and muscular arms. At the time of the assault, he was wearing a navy LaCoste shirt, blue jeans, and running shoes. The assailant was described as having: ! s 4 N ' 5 . j ; j-- - --11im,n7...M.-...-....v.--ur: Composite of assailant Senate claims N.C. was first to fly From Associated Press reports RALEIGH The Senate last week unanimously approved and sent to the House a resolution saying Connecticut was flying in the face of history by claiming the first manned flight. The Connecticut Legislature and governor contend that Gustave Whitehead of Bridgeport, Conn., made the first powered flight two years before Orville and Wilbur Wright flew from Kitty Hawk in 1903. North Carolina officials say historians, including those at the Smithsonian Institute in Washing ton, D.C., have refused to authen ticate the Connecticut claim. "I think it's a lot of fun what Connecticut attempts to do because they can't do it in a serious vein, said the bill's sponsor, Sen. Marc Basnight, D Dare. "It keeps communications going between the two states." Basnight said photographs and eyewitnesses proved that the Wright brothers had made the first successful flight. Lowell Perry, the mayor of Kill Devil Hills, which calls itself "the birth place of aviation," praised. B as night's efforts. "We hope that this will clarify this situation once and for all," Perry said. "I under stand that this surfaces about once every three years." Gray-blue eyes. Dirty-blond, curly hair that is shoulder length in the back. A mustache and acne scars. When asked in a recent interview if any new evidence had surfaced in addition to the description, Summey said, "Nothing good." He said -several people seem to have seen the assailant but police do not know if the sketch has greatly contributed to the success of the investigation. Two suspects who fit the descrip tion were ruled out by the victim, Summey said. , Copies of the composite sketch and a description of the assailant are posted in the law school. Pat Waller, law school dean of student affairs, said administrators asked themselves if the copies would "generate more misinformation" than useful infor mation before deciding to post the sketches. "It (seeing the sketches) does make people more aware, more cautious," she added. The May assault is "something we have been very concerned with," she added. When asked if University students were more likely to be sexually assaulted than other members of the local population, Summey said, "Chances are pretty good it's going to be a student." Locally there are more females in the 17 to 24 age category than any other, he said. "Simple numbers" make students the most likely victims. "There are an equal number of (Chapel Hill area residents likely to commit sexual assault) than these that come from the outside," he added. Chapel Hill Police are currently investigating another sexual assault involving a University graduate student, Summey said. The two cases are not related, he added. Introducing . . .
