2The Tar Heel Thursday. July 24. 1986 t r V Institute, for Private By DWIGHT MARTIN Staff Writer A campus organization devoted to assisting those who wish to undertake bold, risky and important enterprises will dedicate its new home on Oct. 10. 1986. Dr. Raleigh Tillman, director of the Institute for Private Enterprise, said the organization will occupy the $8 million Kenan Center before the offical ceremony. The center is located on south campus near the Dean E. Smith Student Activities Center. Its architecture is like that of a modern English manor. It has a steep roof, gables, a brick and limestone facade and more than 50 windows. The five-story building has two large chimneys, one on each end. When completed, the center's Kenan Lounge, a large room with 30-foot ceilings, will have a marble fireplace and contain a grand piano, according to J. Barlow Herget. a Raleigh-based writer. Tillman said one purpose of the Institute is to assist entrepreneurs by bringing them to the center and the UNC campus. Tillman said he does not consider the philosophy of academic profes r PriOlQ ID'S $9.00 & up Pictures for Job Applications and Resumes 2 for S5 Laminating $1 and up All Done While You wait A Kir sionals, who throughly and slowly examine the world, to be at odds with that of the risk-taking entrepreneur. "Nothing is as risky as neuro surgery." he said. "One must study a long time to practice it." Knowledge also reduces the entre preneur's risk. Tillman said entrepre neurs do not take wild chances, although risk is involved in such ventures. The Institute will use the center as a setting to give advice to those who take risks with their capital. By collecting long-term studies the Institute will assist those who wish to study the entrepreneural process. Another of the center's purposes is to serve as a case history collection for the nation's universities. Tillman said. A national center is needed because collecting individual entre preneur' case histories is a "terribly expensive process for one university." "Basically we are a research center ' and we will provide short courses for potentional entrepreneurs." he said. The courses will provide informa tion that will help entrepreneurs avoid some pitfalls, he added. Tillman said the center is not a classroom building. The University will utilize some of the center's space until its own conference is constructed, he said. The General Assembly has approved funds for a campus-wide conference, but construction has not begun. In time the Institute will fill the center up, he added. The Institute will also bring res ident executives to the center to serve as instructive role models for business adminstration students, Tillman said.
