Football
from page 1
emerged. This year, UNC will begin
with basics, and Humes is the man
designed to carry the load.
Brad Lopp will start the year at
fullback, and Hall almost assuredly
will begin at quarterback. Rumors
of Mark Maye's return have been
floating around, but Maye says he
is still only throw ing every other day
in practice. He will hold for kicks
this season, but it seems doubtful
that he will be ready to quarterback
at the beginning of this season.
Eric Streater, who- ran a 4.38 40
in practice the other day, will be the
primary receiver. Eric Lewis will be
at the other receiver since Quint
Smith is out for the year, with an
injury.
On defense, Reuben Davis and
Tim Goad anchor the Tar Heels' .
eight-man front alignment. Davis
was All-ACC as a sophomore last
season. Rudolph will be the top
linebacker returning, and the defen
sive secondary returns Norris Davis
and Walter Bailey.
"We played very well at times on
defense last season, but we must play
that way for the entire game," Crum
says. "We need more consistency."
The kicking game was a problem
for UNC last year. Kenny Miller and
Lee Gliarmis are both back and will
get some time, and Miller's foray at
wide receiver is now a thing of the
past. Miller may do double-duty at
punter, as Tommy ; Barnhardt,
UNC's most valuable player last
season, is gone.
Overall, this team is harder to
characterize than most UNC units.
It's neither particularly young nor
senior-laden, neither particularly
talented or bereft of stars. With a
quick win against The Citadel at
home on Sept. 6 and at least one
road victory in the next two games,
this UNC team may surprise the
ACC. Those old VW bugs still can
get up and go occasionally.

Baseball update:
Metis still rolling
By JAMES SUROWIECKI
Assistant Sports Editor
Before this baseball season
began, much of the talk was about
the New York Mets and how they
were expected to take it all. At least
that's what much of the talk in this
office was about. Well, the Mets
have really been no surprise, but
other teams and players have, and
it's been a rather fine year for
baseball.
The talk of baseball remains the
Mets. Going into Tuesday's games,
they were 37 games over .500 and
17 games in front of second-place
Montreal. Led by a brilliant pitch
ing staff and a deep offensive
attack, the Mets appear flawless as
they cruise down the homestretch
toward their first division title since
1973.
Davey Johnson has done a
magnificent job of managing this
club. His set five-man rotation of
Sid Fernandez, Dwight Gooden,
Rick Aguilera, Bob Ojeda and Ron
Darling is the best in the league,
and with the recent revival of
Aguilera does not have a weak link.
Prior to his last start, in fact, the
former BYU standout had been
pitching as well as anyone on the
club. Ojeda, acquired from the Red
Sox in a trade which seems to have
helped both teams, is 13-4 and
shows no signs of the collapse
which some said was inevitable.
Like John Tudor, he has been freed
from the claustrophobic nightmare
of Fenway's Green Monster and
has responded beautifully.
Fernandez is also 13-4 and seems
to have fulfilled his enormous
potential, while Darling stands at
11-4. As for the Doctor, Gooden
(12-4) has been nowhere near as
overpowering as he was last year,
but is still an ace.
If the Mets have a weakness,
aside from a shortstop who can hit
and field, it may be their, bullpen.
That's a curious thing to say when
Jesse Orosco has 16 saves and
Roger McDowell 13 saves to go
along with an 12-6 record. But
neither Orosco nor McDowell have
been sharp of late, and that could
be dangerous in a short playoff
series. The' expected emergence of
Randy Myers could take on added
importance before the season ends.
As for hitting, just about eve
ryone on the Mets has done it. With
the long-needed release of George
Foster, Rafael Santana is the only
weak offensive link. Darryl Straw
berry, although he has not had the
season some expected, has been his
usual phenomenal self, while Gary
Carter, now on the 15-day disabled
list, has 19 homers and 87 RBI
despite a inordinately low batting
average. Keith Hernandez leads the
league in walks and is hovering
around the .300 mark, and the
supporting cast of Dykstra,
Knight, Mitchell, Backman and
Co. has been magnificent. The
Mets are the best baseball team to
come down the pike in a long time.
Heard enough about the Mets?
Well, the rest of the National
League is pretty interesting, as well.
In the East, the only battle left is
for second place, where Montreal,
Philadelphia and St. Louis are all
entangled. The Cardinals' story has
been particularly baffling, as last
year's winningest team has fallen
to a mere .500 team. And the Cards
are only 59-59 because they've won
23 of their last 32 games. Whitey
Herzog seems as confused as
anyone.
Actually, the way the media has
reacted to St. Louis' demise reveals
much about how little they under
stand baseball. Last year, Vince
Coleman was painted as the hero
of the Cardinals' rise to glory. Since
Coleman was on base, distracting
the pitchers, stealing bases, forcing
the pitchers to throw fastballs to
Tommy Herr and Willie McGee,
the Cards were able to win. In
truth, Coleman's positive contribu
tion to St. Louis came primarily
from his speed in the outfield and
his ability to eliminate the double
play. But the media refused to see
it that way.
Of course this year very little is
said about the effects of Coleman's
speed. After all, he's stealing just
as much, and in many respects is
having a better season. But the
Cards have had a terrible year, and
the reason for that is because the
people who really mattered last
year - the Herrs, McGees and
Clarks, have not done the job. The
only one who has is Ozzie Smith,
but even he can't carry a team by
himself. The truth of the matter,
as this year's version of the Car
dinals shows, is that stolen bases
have very little to do with winning.
The rest of the East is decidedly
uninteresting, mainly because they
have no hope of winning. Two
people worth mentioning, though,
are Mike Schmidt and Von Hayes
of the Phillies, who have both
turned in marvelous seasons
Schmidt leads the league in slug
ging, homers and RBI and is sixth
in on-base percentage. Hayes is
hitting .296, with 58 walks, 31
doubles, 72 runs scored and
another 68 driven in.
In the West, the big stories are
the Giants and the Astros, as well
as the splendid performance of
Fernando Valenzuela, who should
be a shoo-in for-the CyYbiuigVTjQO
much has been written Sout San
Francisco already, so well let
Roger Craig's "hum-baby" troops
lie, although the job he's done with
a pitching staff of castoffs is
remarkable. As for Houston, right
now it's the Glenn Davis-Kevin
Bass show, as both young players
are having amazing years. Davis is
going to be one of the best sluggers
in baseball, although he needs to
walk more. One man with no
problem in that department is Bill
Doran, the Astro leadoff man who
