6The Daily Tar HeelTuesday, September 2, 1986 Men's soccer plagmed By MIKE MACKAY Staff Writer The host UNC men's soccer team opened its season Labor Day wee kend by finishing runner-up in the North Carolina Invitational, losing 2-1 in the final to the University of Central Florida despite having twice as many shots on goal as the Knights. On Saturday, the Tar Heels dem olished a strong team from the University of Massachusetts, 3-0. The next day, North Carolina made a crucial defensive mistake in over time that allowed the Knights to take the tournament plaque back to Orlando. "WeVe got to build from here," said assistant coach Geoff Griffin. "It was a tough loss, but it concerns me only if we dorrt learn from it." Starting from an offensive that began out of the Tar Heels' zone defense, Dino Megaloudis made a run down the left side and sent a perfect cross from 30 yards out to Donald Cogsville, who headed the ball to put UNC ahead, 1-0. "Dino put the ball right there and there was really nothing I could do besides put it in the goal," Cogsville said. The first half ended with the Minutemen managing only a few misfires on goal that might as well have been aimed at nearby Navy Field. After another offensive set up off a steal by the UNC defense, Tommy Nicholson made a short assist to Mark Devey, a senior forward returning this year after missing last season for academic reasons, who tallied the final goal from 15 feet in UNC's victory. A key to the Tar Heel's success at controlling the midfield during the game was Reid Storch. "Reid Storch really won the midfield and regained possession for us a phenomenal number of times," Dorrance said. "If he continues to play a simple game by not holding onto the ball too long, he can be one of the finest players in the conference." Sunday was a different story for the Tar Heels, as their offense lacked that extra ingredient to capitalize on outshooting Central Florida. "They really didn't create any real scoring chances out of their offense," Dorrance said. "Their two goals were basically the result of the failure to clear a ball and a mistake by our goalkeeper's part on coming out." Although the Knights were rarely able to penetrate UNC's zone defense, they took advantage of their opportunities. A few minutes after the UNC goal, Central Florida made a fast break down the right side after a Tar Heel defender stumbled. A centerback was forced to make up for the empty space by tackling the attacker, setting up an indirect kick from a normally safe area about 40 yards out. But normalities were not to be on this play, as goalkeeper Darren Royer put himself out of position by following the shot, which was then knocked towards the center of the goal. There it found the eager toe of the Knight's David Hunt, who promptly tied the game at 1-1. The score remained tied until the second 10-minute overtime, when Central Florida launched an offen-, sive after stealing the ball from a UNC midfielder who dribbled into double coverage. The table was then set for the Knights' Tony Walsh, the tourna ment's MVP, who was in the right spot at the right time and blasted a shot into the corner of the goal that gave UCF the tournament title. "I don't even remember what happened," Walsh said. "The ball came out from a defender. I con trolled it and the ball went in. . . unbelievable." soccer takes own tourney title victory in their 4-0 defeat of the University of Massachusetts on Saturday. After playing to a scoreless tie in the first half, senior forward and team captain April Heinrichs scored the game's first goal on a penalty kick 6:54 into the second half. Four minutes later, UCF sopho more forward Michelle Akers fol lowed with a penalty kick to tie the score. U N C head coach Anson Dorrance said the game on Saturday was very emotional and may have affected the team's play on Sunday. "1 was very surprised with the margin of victory (Saturday) because last year they (Massachusetts) beat us 2-0 and they returned their entire team," Dorrance said. "We played with a tremendous amount of inten sity and that was the difference in that game. I think we came out today with a little less excitement. It's hard to get that up for every game." Nevertheless, he said UCF played an exceptional game. "I think UCF played inspired today," Dorrance said. Despite the tie, Dorrance said he was pleased with his team after their first two games. "I'm pretty pleased with where we are at this point." Dorrance said. "If this is an indication of how we can look after 16 days of practice, then we're going to continue to improve as the season goes on." Werden was helped with an assist by Marcia McDermott. The second goal was kicked in by Heinrichs, as was the third with 22:03 remaining in the first half. McDermott also got the assists with both of Heinrichs' goals. UMass had a spectacular shot with 13:35 left in the half as Cath erine Cassady broke away and went one-on-one with UNC goalie Kat hleen O'Dell. Pressuic irom O'Dell forced the shot upward where it hit the top of the goal and bounced straight down. T he half ended with liNC ahead 3-0. Gretchen Gegg stepped in for O'Dell in the second half and continued to hold the Minutewomen scoreless. The final UNC goal was scored by Julie Guarnotta 25 min utes into the period. The goal was assisted by Bettina Bernardi and Heinrichs. Dorrance was excited with the way his team played in the victory. "I'm overjoyed with their perfor mance," he said. "We played with so much intensity and strength. I Classified announcements The Daily Tar Heel needs Assistant Managiag Editors to lay oat the paper.
